Round to the nearest penny

An amount of 1.235 rounds to 1.24 and comes back as 124 cents: a half-cent always moves away from zero, the rule most ledgers expect. Enter any figure with three or more decimals and get it to two places. Free in your browser.

Cashiers, invoicing tools, and checkout pipelines all need the same quiet contract: take a raw money figure that may carry three or more decimal places and snap it to the nearest cent. This nearest-penny calculator applies half-up rounding, the school rule most ledgers still expect, so a half-cent increases the last kept digit away from zero. You send one finite amount; you receive the cleaned figure, a numeric rounded value, a two-decimal display string, and the integer cent count. Ties such as one point two three five become one point two four, and negative one point two three five becomes negative one point two four.

How half-up rounding to the nearest penny works

A penny is one hundredth of the major currency unit, so rounding to the nearest penny means keeping exactly two digits after the decimal point and deciding what to do with everything beyond that. Half-up looks at the first discarded digit. If that digit is four or less, the two kept cents stay as they are.

If that digit is five or greater, one cent is added to the kept pair, and carry walks through nines so that nineteen point nine nine five becomes twenty point zero zero. An exact half-cent is treated as a signal to increase magnitude: one point two three five becomes one point two four, and negative one point two three five becomes negative one point two four. That is the school rule, the Java RoundingMode.HALF_UP rule, and the Python decimal ROUND_HALF_UP rule.

It is not banker's rounding, which would send some half-cents toward the even cent. It is also not a naive JavaScript Math.round of the amount times one hundred, which can lose a half-cent to binary residue such as one point zero zero five times one hundred. This solver writes the amount as a plain decimal digit string, including a faithful expansion of scientific notation, then inspects the third fractional digit on that string.

Where nearest-penny rounding shows up in real work

Checkout, invoicing, and payroll pipelines round unit prices, tax lines, tips, and net pay to two decimal places before the customer sees a total and before a ledger row is written, so the interface and the books share one number. Point-of-sale and hospitality tools convert a fractional surcharge or a split bill into a payable amount that a card network will accept.

Classroom and exam settings that ask students to round money to the nearest penny need a single trusted oracle for half-cent and negative cases so answer keys and student calculators do not diverge. Data engineers normalize imported money columns to a fixed two-decimal contract before hashing or comparing rows, cutting flaky equality checks caused by long binary tails.

Keep the amount inside the published limits, pin the display and cents fields in tests, and you get a reproducible nearest-penny result for homework, spreadsheets, and edge workers without standing up a decimal-arithmetic library of your own.

Checkout and invoice line totals

Snap unit prices, tax lines, and invoice totals to the nearest penny with a documented half-up rule so the checkout label and the ledger row share one number.

Homework and exam keys on money

Check half-cent and negative amounts against a deterministic oracle so one point two three five and negative one point two three five never disagree with the school half-up rule.

What does round to the nearest penny mean?

It means keep exactly two digits after the decimal point (one cent) and apply half-up to the rest. 1.234 becomes 1.23; 1.235 becomes 1.24.

Which rounding rule is used for a half-cent?

Half-up, also called half away from zero. A first discarded digit of 5 or greater increases magnitude, so 1.235 becomes 1.24 and −1.235 becomes −1.24.

Why is there a display string as well as a number?

The display field always has two decimal places; cents is the same value as a signed integer of pennies.

What does the nearest-penny calculator cost?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

How are negative amounts rounded?

The same way, mirrored: an exact half-cent moves away from zero, so −1.235 becomes −1.24, just as 1.235 becomes 1.24. The sign is kept and only the size of the amount is rounded.

How half-up rounding to the nearest penny works

There is no random seed, no wall-clock timestamp, and no network call; identical amounts always produce identical JSON. Missing amount, non-numeric text, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input and are not charged.

What you send and what you get back

Typical checks include one point two three five yielding display one point two four and one hundred twenty-four cents, nineteen point nine nine five yielding twenty point zero zero and two thousand cents, and negative one point two three five yielding negative one point two four. Wire the free browser form for a quick preview, then call the identical contract from scripts when you need bulk settlement before storage or display. Send a JSON body with one required field. amount is the finite monetary figure to snap to the nearest cent; aliases value, n, number, input, x, and money are accepted when wiring forms or scripts. The field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string in ordinary decimal or scientific notation. A missing field, an empty string, a currency symbol, a thousands separator, NaN, or Infinity fails with invalid_input and names the offending field. Absolute magnitudes above one quadrillion are rejected so the decimal expansion stays inside safe double-precision range on the Worker and in the browser. On success the body echoes the cleaned amount, reports rounded as the half-up result as a JSON number, sets display to a two-decimal string so trailing zeros survive JSON (twenty point zero zero stays twenty point zero zero), reports cents as the signed integer number of pennies, and sets method to half_up so clients can document the rule without reading source. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.

Where nearest-penny rounding shows up in real work

Because this capability is a pure parse engine, API pricing is the published base of $0.002 per successful item and failed validation does not consume balance. This landing targets people searching for round to the nearest penny, round to the nearest cent, or half-up money rounding. It does not convert a decimal into a percent, does not reduce a value to significant figures, and does not snap a figure to a chosen number of decimal places or to the nearest ten: those are different search intents and different tools.

Imported money column cleanup

Normalize a CSV or API money column to two decimal places and integer cents before hashing or comparing rows, so long binary tails do not break equality checks.

What must I send?

A finite number in amount (aliases value, n, number, input, x, money). Currency symbols, empty strings, NaN, and Infinity are rejected with invalid_input.
