How a chronogram hides a year

A chronogram is a phrase in which some letters double as Roman numerals, so that adding them up reveals a year. The seven letters that count are M for 1000, D for 500, C for 100, L for 50, X for 10, V for 5 and I for 1; every other letter is ignored. In “aMore paVLVs” that leaves M, V, L and V, which add up to 1000 plus 5 plus 50 plus 5, or 1060. The calculator lists the letters it found in the order they appear, so you can check each one against the phrase.

Simple addition, and the mistakes it avoids

Unlike an ordinary Roman numeral, a chronogram is read by plain addition: the position of a letter never matters and nothing is subtracted, so a V written before an L adds 5 instead of taking it away. The most common slip when counting by hand is to miss a letter hidden inside a word, or to forget that an I or a V in an ordinary word counts just as much as the others. Pasting the whole phrase lets the calculator catch every letter at once.

What is each Roman letter worth?

M is worth 1000, D 500, C 100, L 50, X 10, V 5 and I 1. Any other letter in the phrase adds nothing to the total.

Does the order of the letters matter?

No. In a chronogram the letters are simply added and never subtracted, unlike an ordinary Roman numeral. A V written before an L adds 5 instead of taking it away.

Can I see which letters were counted?

Yes. Along with the year, the calculator shows the list of Roman letters it found, in the order they appear in the phrase, so you can check them one by one.

Do the other letters in the phrase change the result?

No. Only the seven Roman letters count and everything else is ignored. In “aMore paVLVs” the letters a, o, r, p and s add nothing; the year comes from M, V, L and V alone.

The calculator is free in the browser, deterministic, and identical on the API path. Inputs are validated before arithmetic so invalid payloads fail with invalid_input.
