Raw dog food calculator

A 20 kg adult dog fed 2.5% of its body weight needs 500 g of raw food a day, so the portion follows the dog, not a kibble bag. Puppies use a higher percentage of their current weight. Free in your browser.

Raw-fed dogs are commonly portioned as a percentage of current body weight rather than from a kibble bag's calorie table. This raw dog food calculator takes a strictly positive body weight in kilograms and a feeding percentage, converts that percentage of body mass into grams, and returns the recommended daily raw portion. A twenty kilogram adult at two point five percent receives five hundred grams per day; a growing puppy at a higher percentage receives more relative to mass. Treat the result as a planning estimate for BARF and prey-model households, not as a complete nutrient profile or a diagnosis that replaces a veterinarian who can examine body condition, growth, and the balance of muscle, bone, and organ in the bowl.

How the daily raw food portion is calculated

Raw feeding for dogs is commonly planned as a percentage of current body weight rather than as a calorie table copied from a kibble bag. This calculator uses that identity: daily grams equal body weight in kilograms times one thousand times feeding percent divided by one hundred, which simplifies to grams per day equals weight in kilograms times feeding percent times ten.

A twenty kilogram adult at two point five percent therefore receives five hundred grams of raw food per day, because twenty times two point five times ten is five hundred. A ten kilogram growing puppy at eight percent receives eight hundred grams. Typical adult maintenance sits between two and three percent of body weight; many owners start near two point five percent for a moderately active companion.

Weight-loss plans often use one point five to two percent; highly active, working, or underweight dogs may need three to four percent; puppies during growth commonly sit between five and ten percent of current body weight, not of expected adult weight. Feeding percent must also be a finite number greater than zero; the calculator rejects values above fifteen percent so a typo cannot request an implausible pile of meat.

The result is an educational planning estimate for BARF and prey-model households, not a veterinary prescription and not a complete nutrient profile.

Where a raw dog food calculator earns its keep

Shelter intake desks and boarding kennels need a repeatable gram target when a raw-fed adult arrives without a feeding history, and they need the same contract a week later when the scale is used again after a change in body condition. Breeders tracking a litter can log weight plus a higher feeding percent as the puppies grow and watch the recommended grams move without inventing a private spreadsheet formula that drifts between staff.

Rescue software can call the same parse module from a form or from a batch job without standing up a nutrition suite. Do not treat a single gram figure as a complete diet: an unbalanced bowl that is only muscle meat can fail calcium and iodine even when the mass is correct, and giant, toy, lactating, and ill animals can sit outside the usual two-to-three-percent teaching band. Re-weigh on the same scale, keep the feeding percent honest for life stage and condition, and pair the number with a hands-on exam.

Scale puppy raw rations as the litter grows

Record weight at each visit and re-run the same growth percent so the recommended grams rise with body mass, without a private formula.

Home BARF planning between veterinary visits

Re-run the same kilogram weight weekly so an owner can see whether the recommended daily grams have changed before the next clinic appointment.

How do I calculate how much raw food my dog should eat each day?

Send a positive body weight in kilograms and a feeding percent of current body weight. Use about 2.5 for a typical adult and a higher percent for a growing puppy.

What feeding percentage should I use for an adult versus a puppy?

Adult maintenance is commonly two to three percent of current body weight. Weight loss often uses one and a half to two percent; active or underweight dogs may need three to four. Puppies often sit between five and ten percent of current weight, not expected adult weight.

What happens if weight is zero or negative?

Weight must be a finite positive number in kilograms; a missing, zero, negative, or non-numeric value is rejected and is not billed.

Is the raw portion a complete BARF recipe or a veterinary diagnosis?

No. It is a mass estimate from body weight and a feeding percent. Muscle, bone, organ balance, calcium, and calories still need a nutritionist or veterinarian. Pair the number with body condition and a hands-on exam.

Should a puppy's raw portion be based on its expected adult weight?

No. Use the puppy's current body weight and a higher growth percentage, then weigh again as it grows. Basing the portion on the expected adult weight would overfeed a young puppy.

How the daily raw food portion is calculated

Weight must be a strictly positive finite number in kilograms after parsing: a zero, a negative, NaN, or a non-numeric string is invalid_input. Balanced raw meals still need muscle, bone, and organ in the ratios your nutritionist or veterinarian recommends, and this endpoint does not compute calcium, phosphorus, or calorie density from a recipe.

Input contract, response fields, and validation errors

Example: twenty kilograms at two point five percent yields five hundred grams per day. Ten kilograms at three percent yields three hundred grams. POST a JSON body with a required positive weight in kilograms and a required feeding percent of current body weight. weight is a finite number greater than zero; aliases such as weight_kg, body_weight, kg, mass, and bw are accepted. feeding_percent is the percentage of body weight to feed each day, so two point five means two point five percent, not a fraction of one. Aliases percent, percentage, feeding_percentage, pct, and rate are accepted. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string. After parsing, weight must fall between two tenths of a kilogram and two hundred kilograms, and feeding_percent must fall between one half and fifteen, so a unit typo cannot explode the product. Missing weight, a zero, a negative, NaN, or a non-numeric string fails with invalid_input naming the field and stating that it must be a positive number. The same positive-number rule applies to feeding_percent: a zero percent is not silently treated as a fast. Those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes weight, weight_kg, and feeding_percent, and returns grams_per_day as the primary daily portion, kilograms_per_day as the same mass in kilograms, and a formula string. Successful API calls use prepaid KIT balance at the published $0.002 base price per item; invalid input does not consume balance. Split the daily grams across two or more meals in your own kitchen; this endpoint returns the daily total only.

Where a raw dog food calculator earns its keep

This endpoint does not estimate calories, does not read a bag label, and does not replace a veterinarian. It answers one search intent honestly: given positive body weight in kilograms and a feeding percentage, how many grams of raw food should this dog be offered each day.

Set a boarding-kennel raw bowl target

Weigh the dog on intake, choose a feeding percent for adult maintenance or growth, and store grams_per_day so every shift preps the same daily mass.

What does the raw dog food calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
