Pressure calculator
A force of 1000 N spread over 0.5 m² makes 2000 Pa, which is 0.02 bar. Enter any two of force, area and pressure to get the third, with the pressure given in pascals, bar and psi side by side. Free in your browser.

Pressure is the force applied perpendicular to a surface divided by the contact area that carries that force. Engineers, students, and technicians use P equals F over A every day when sizing hydraulic rams, checking floor loads, interpreting pressure gauges, or converting a known contact stress into the push force a machine must deliver. This capability solves that definition deterministically: send any two of force in newtons, area in square metres, and pressure in pascals, and receive the missing quantity together with pressure expressed in pascals, bar, and psi so laboratory notes, SI homework, and imperial-unit field sheets stay aligned. Zero or non-positive area is rejected with a clear invalid input error because division by zero has no physical meaning for uniform contact pressure.
The definition P equals F over A and which two fields to send
In continuum mechanics the average normal pressure on a surface is the normal force divided by the area of that surface when the load is distributed uniformly. Write force F in newtons, area A in square metres, and pressure P in pascals, where one pascal equals one newton per square metre. The product identity rearranges freely: F equals P times A, and A equals F divided by P, so any missing member of the triad can be recovered when the other two are known.
Omit the unknown rather than inventing a placeholder, because providing all three values is rejected as over-specified and providing only one is rejected as under-specified. Area must be strictly positive both when supplied and when computed; a zero area input fails immediately with invalid input so the engine never claims an infinite pressure. Force and pressure may be signed when modeling opposite contact directions, but a computed area that would be non-positive is rejected so the geometry remains a real contact patch.
Magnitudes are bounded for isolate safety while still covering classroom, workshop, and light industrial orders of magnitude.
What you can do with it
Homework and lab verification
Students compute contact pressure from a measured force and stamped area, convert the result to bar and psi, and get a clear error when area is zero or omitted.
Hydraulic and machine design sketches
Designers size cylinder force from system pressure and piston area, or recover the required area for a target force at a fixed line pressure.
FAQ
What happens if area is zero?
Zero area would require infinite pressure under P=F/A, so it is rejected and not charged.
Can I solve for force or area instead of pressure?
Yes. Provide any two of force, area, and pressure (Pa) and omit the unknown.
Is the pressure calculator free?
The browser tool runs free on your device.
Does it show the pressure in bar and psi?
Yes. Every result lists the pressure in pascals, bar and psi together, all from the same value. For example, 2000 Pa appears as 0.02 bar and 0.2900754755 psi.
What happens if I enter all three values?
The calculation is refused, because one of the values would have nothing left to solve. Enter exactly two of force, area and pressure and leave the unknown one empty.

Technical notes
The definition P equals F over A and which two fields to send
Send a JSON body that includes exactly two of the three fields force, area, and pressure; aliases F, force_n, A, area_m2, P, pressure_pa, and pa are accepted for the same quantities. Identical inputs always produce identical JSON because the path is pure arithmetic with no network, no random seed, and no wall clock.
Reading Pa, bar, and psi in the response
The solved field names which quantity was computed so user interfaces can highlight the unknown without re-deriving it. When you only need a unit conversion of a known pressure, supply that pressure together with a unit area of one square metre and read force equal to the pressure magnitude, or supply force and pressure to recover the implied area of contact. On success the response echoes force in newtons, area in square metres, and three pressure fields derived from the same pascal value: pressure_pa is the SI pressure used in the algebra, pressure_bar divides that value by one hundred thousand because one bar equals exactly ten to the five pascals, and pressure_psi divides by the conventional international factor that maps pounds-force per square inch into pascals. The formula label is always P equals F over A and the method label is always pressure_force_area, which lets pipelines branch without sniffing shapes. Use pressure_pa when feeding other SI-native tools, pressure_bar for process and weather-style reporting, and pressure_psi when collaborating with imperial documentation or gauge faceplates marked in pounds per square inch. Missing inputs, non-finite numbers, zero area, zero pressure when solving for area, and wrong field counts all fail with invalid_input and are not charged.
API usage, pricing, workflows, and practical limits
Call the free in-browser pressure calculator for homework checks, lab demos, hydraulic sizing sketches, and quick unit cross-checks without installing a full finite-element package or a unit-conversion library. Keep contact areas physically realistic and avoid microscopic zeros that would inflate pressure beyond the published magnitude bound. Use the prepaid API when a manufacturing MES, structural-analysis notebook, educational grading oracle, or IoT edge service needs a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with force and torque calculators when the next step is reaction loads or moments, or with gas-law tools when absolute pressure later enters an isochoric or isothermal process model. Authors shipping SDKs can map pressure_pa, pressure_bar, and pressure_psi directly into multi-unit tables that mirror what students write on paper when they convert between SI and customary pressure units after applying P equals F over A by hand.
Integration use cases
Multi-unit reporting pipelines
Services that must log pressure in Pa, bar, and psi from one SI solve call a stable prepaid endpoint instead of reimplementing conversion factors in every language.
Technical questions
How do I calculate pressure from force and area?
Send JSON with force in newtons and area in square metres (for example force: 1000, area: 0.5). The response includes pressure_pa, pressure_bar, and pressure_psi plus solved set to pressure.
Which pressure units are returned?
Always pascals (pressure_pa), bar (pressure_bar, exact 1 bar = 10^5 Pa), and psi (pressure_psi using the conventional international conversion factor).
