Port length calculator

Give it a 3-inch port, a 40 Hz tuning and a 2 cubic foot box, and it tells you how long to cut each tube, already net of the 2.196 inches the open ends add. Works for 1 to 16 identical round ports. Free in your browser.

A bass-reflex speaker box is a Helmholtz resonator: the mass of air in the port and the compliance of the air in the cabinet set a tuning frequency Fb that supports the driver below its free-air resonance. Builders need the duct length that hits that Fb for a chosen inner diameter, net internal volume, and number of identical circular ports. This port length calculator applies the circular-vent Helmholtz formula with a 0.732-diameter end correction, takes diameter in inches, tuning frequency in hertz, box volume in cubic feet, and port count, and returns the required length of each port in inches.

How Helmholtz port length is computed from diameter, Fb, volume and port count

A vented loudspeaker enclosure is a Helmholtz resonator. The slug of air in the port behaves as a mass, and the air sealed in the cabinet behaves as a spring. Their resonance is the box tuning frequency Fb that you choose so the port output supports the driver below its free-air resonance and the impedance peak sits where you intended.

Rearranging the Helmholtz identity for a circular duct gives the physical length of each port. The effective length Leff equals the speed of sound squared times the total port area S, divided by four pi squared times Fb squared times the net internal volume. The speed of sound is taken as three hundred forty-three metres per second, the usual twenty-degree indoor figure, converted internally to inches per second so that diameter in inches and volume in cubic feet produce length in inches.

The geometric area of N identical circular ports is N times pi times the square of D over two. Because the air at each mouth of the duct participates in the oscillating mass, a length correction is subtracted from Leff. This calculator uses the classic speaker-building factor k equals 0.732 diameters, which is the sum of a flanged inner mouth at the baffle and an unflanged outer mouth — the usual unflared PVC or cardboard tube through a cabinet wall.

A negative result is physically honest: the end correction already supplies more mass than the Helmholtz target, so that diameter, count, volume, and Fb cannot be realized as a simple tube. Raise Fb, enlarge the box, shrink the diameter, or use fewer ports.

Home subwoofer bass-reflex builds

Turn a chosen net volume, target Fb, and circular port diameter into a cut length in inches for PVC or cardboard tube through the baffle.

Car audio dual-port enclosures

Size two identical ports together so each tube stays short enough to fit a trunk while still hitting the intended tuning frequency.

Studio monitor and PA cabinet rebuilds

Recover a missing vent length from box volume and a target Fb when an original tube is lost and only the drawing remains.

What units does the port length calculator use?

Convert litres to cubic feet and millimetres to inches before calling; the arithmetic does not mix unit systems.

Why must every input be positive?

A zero or negative diameter, Fb, volume, or port count makes the Helmholtz length undefined (division by zero, empty cabinet, or no duct).

What does a negative port length mean?

The mouth correction already supplies more air mass than the target Fb requires, so that diameter, count, volume, and frequency cannot be realized as a simple tube. Enlarge the box, raise Fb, shrink the diameter, or use fewer ports.

Why is the cut port shorter than the effective length?

Because the air just beyond each mouth of the tube moves with the air inside it. For a 3-inch port the calculator removes 0.732 times the diameter, 2.196 inches, from the effective length to give the physical cut.

What speed of sound does the port calculator assume?

It uses 343 metres per second, the usual figure for a room at about twenty degrees. That value is converted internally so a diameter in inches and a volume in cubic feet give a length in inches.

How Helmholtz port length is computed from diameter, Fb, volume and port count

The returned port_length is therefore Leff minus 0.732 times D, in inches, and it is the length of each of the N ports because they are identical. The endpoint does not model flared ends, slot ports of rectangular section, stuffing, leakage, or driver displacement volume; those are netted out of the box volume by the builder before the call.

Input contract, units, response fields, and validation errors

Errors always name the canonical field so the web form can mark the right control. Magnitudes above the documented ceilings fail so a typo cannot blow the isolate. A familiar check is a three-inch port, forty hertz, two cubic feet, and one port; the same box with two ports shortens each tube because the total area rose. POST a JSON body with four required fields. port_diameter is the inner diameter of each circular port in inches; aliases diameter, d, Dv, and port_d are accepted. tuning_frequency is the desired box tuning Fb in hertz; aliases frequency, fb, Fb, freq, and hz are accepted. box_volume is the net internal enclosure volume in cubic feet after driver displacement is subtracted; aliases volume, vb, Vb, and enclosure_volume are accepted. port_count is the number of identical ports as a positive integer from one to sixteen; aliases n, N, ports, and number_of_ports are accepted. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or as a numeric string; booleans, objects, empty strings, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input. Zero and negative values fail because Helmholtz length is undefined for a vanishing diameter, a zero hertz target, an empty cabinet, or zero ports — that is the contract this capability exists to enforce, and those failures are not billed. port_count must be a whole number: one and a half ports is not a physical layout this identity covers. On success the body echoes the cleaned inputs and returns port_length as the geometric length of each port in inches, port_area as the total circular area in square inches, effective_length as Leff before the mouth correction, end_correction as k times D, a formula string restating the identity, and unit set to in. Missing fields are invalid_input and are not billed. Successful API calls use the published $0.002 base price; the free browser path runs the same solve function without consuming prepaid balance.

Where a speaker port length calculator earns its keep

Home subwoofer builders who have already chosen a net internal volume and a target Fb from a Thiele–Small alignment still need a cut length for the PVC or cardboard tube they will glue through the baffle. A three-inch port in a two-cubic-foot box at forty hertz is a different stick of pipe than the same port in a four-cubic-foot box, and cutting twice because the end correction was forgotten wastes a weekend. Studio-monitor and small PA cabinets that are being rebuilt with a new woofer need the same identity when the original tube is lost and only the box volume and a target Fb remain on a drawing. Car-audio enclosures packed into a trunk are even less forgiving: two identical ports are often used to keep each tube short enough to fit, and this calculator accepts port_count so the pair is sized together instead of guessed. Spreadsheet users who already compute Vb can call the API from a script and pin port_length in tests so a shop ticket never disagrees with the page. Keep every input finite and strictly positive, send volume in cubic feet and diameter in inches, pin port_length in your tests, and you get a reproducible duct length for a subwoofer, a car box, a monitor rebuild, or an edge worker without standing up an enclosure-design suite of your own.

How is speaker port length calculated?

The circular-vent Helmholtz identity is rearranged for geometric length: Leff = c²S/(4π²Fb²Vb) with c = 343 m/s, then L = Leff − 0.732·D. Send diameter in inches, Fb in hertz, volume in cubic feet, and a positive port count; the API returns L in inches.

What does the speaker port length calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
