Parallel capacitance calculator
Three capacitors of 10, 22 and 47 µF in parallel give 79 µF: the values simply add. Enter the list in one unit to check a decoupling bank on a power rail or a filter built from catalog parts. Free in your browser.

When capacitors share the same two nodes, they are connected in parallel and their capacitances add: the equivalent is simply C one plus C two plus every other branch. That identity is the first tool technicians and students reach for when building filter banks, snubbers, decoupling networks, and energy-storage packs from standard catalog values. This capability accepts a list of non-negative capacitor values in one consistent unit, returns the parallel total with a stable formula label, and rejects any negative entry with a clear invalid input error so homework checkers and design scripts never treat a sign typo as a physical result.
What parallel capacitance means and how to send values
In a parallel connection every capacitor sees the same voltage, and the total charge stored is the sum of the charges on each device. Because charge equals capacitance times voltage, the charges sum only when the capacitances themselves sum: C equivalent equals C one plus C two through C n. All entries must already share one unit—farads, microfarads, nanofarads, or picofarads—because the engine does not convert prefixes.
A single capacitor is valid and returns that value as the total; an empty list is rejected. Zero is allowed and contributes nothing to the sum, which matches placing an open or unused pad in a design. Negative numbers fail with invalid input because this product treats capacitance as a non-negative catalog quantity.
What you can do with it
Decoupling and filter banks
Hardware designers sum parallel ceramic and electrolytic values on a power rail to confirm the bulk plus high-frequency total meets the target capacitance.
BOM and kit configurators
Product pages and inventory tools combine standard catalog values into a single parallel equivalent for kits, spares packs, and substitution tables.
FAQ
How do I calculate total capacitance for capacitors in parallel?
The response total is the sum C_eq = C_1 + C_2 + … + C_n.
Does this work for series capacitors?
No. Parallel networks add capacitances; series networks use the reciprocal sum. Use a dedicated series capacitance tool for that intent.
Is the parallel capacitance calculator free?
The browser tool runs free on your device.
Which units should I use?
Any consistent unit is fine—F, µF, nF, or pF—as long as every entry uses the same unit. The engine does not convert between prefixes; total is returned in that same unit.
Can I enter just one capacitor, or a zero?
Yes. A single capacitor is accepted and its value comes back as the total. A zero is accepted too and adds nothing, the same as leaving a pad unpopulated on the board. An empty list is refused.

Technical notes
What parallel capacitance means and how to send values
Send the required field values as a JSON array of finite non-negative numbers, or as numeric strings that parse cleanly. Aliases capacitors, capacitances, caps, C, and list are accepted when your pipeline prefers textbook or BOM naming. Magnitudes must stay within published finite bounds so Worker isolates stay stable. Identical inputs always produce identical JSON because the path is pure arithmetic with no network, no random seed, and no wall clock.
Reading the total, formula, rounding, and error cases
Use total alone when a BOM calculator only needs the equivalent; use n and values when a report must show each branch beside the sum. The error message for a negative entry names the index so spreadsheets and graders can highlight the bad cell. Series networks use the reciprocal sum and are intentionally out of scope—send a dedicated series product when that is the search intent rather than forcing a wrong formula here. On success the response echoes n as the capacitor count and values as the parsed non-negative list so clients can confirm coercion of numeric strings. The formula string is always C_eq equals C_1 plus C_2 plus dots plus C_n, and the method label is always parallel_sum, so downstream code can branch without sniffing shapes. The unit_hint field reminds integrators that units match the inputs and are not renamed by the engine. Missing values, a non-array values field, an empty array, non-finite entries, out-of-range magnitudes, and any negative capacitance all fail with invalid_input and are not charged.
API usage, pricing, labs, BOM tools, and practical limits
Call the free in-browser parallel capacitance calculator for quick checks when combining decoupling capacitors, building RC filters from E-series parts, or verifying a lab exercise without installing a spreadsheet. Authors shipping SDKs can map total and formula directly into UI copy that states capacitors in parallel add, matching what students write on a whiteboard and what engineers put in a design note. Send a JSON body with the required values array of non-negative capacitances. Use the prepaid API when a parts configurator, electronics homework platform, PCB design helper, or inventory tool needs a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with unit converters when inputs arrive mixed as nanofarads and microfarads, and convert everything to one unit before calling. This product does not rate voltage, ESR, ripple current, or temperature coefficients; those constraints belong in component selection tools, not in the pure sum.
Integration use cases
Homework and lab grading
Physics and electronics courses pin deterministic JSON fixtures for parallel capacitor drills, including intentional negative values that must fail with invalid_input.
Technical questions
What happens if a capacitor value is negative?
The request fails with invalid_input. Capacitance must be non-negative in this calculator; the error message names the index of the bad entry and the call is not charged.
