Minimum passing grade calculator
With 60% of the course graded at an average of 78.92 and a final worth 40%, you need 56.63 on the final to finish at 70. It also tells you when passing is already safe or out of reach. Free in your browser.

Students and advisors constantly ask a narrow but high-stakes question: given the grades already banked and how much of the course is still left, what minimum score on the remaining work keeps the overall average at or above the pass mark? Hand algebra with mixed weights is easy to get wrong under exam stress, and spreadsheets drift when someone forgets a weight or flips a percent. This minimum passing grade calculator accepts completed score-and-weight rows, the positive weight still outstanding, and a chosen passing threshold, then returns the exact minimum uniform score required on that remaining weight. It also reports whether you already pass even with a zero on what is left, or whether the threshold is mathematically unreachable even at full marks.
Where a pass-line remaining-score calculator earns its keep
Students use a minimum passing grade calculator mid-term to decide whether to prioritize the final, drop a low-stakes unit, or seek tutoring before an irreversible gap opens. Academic advisors and tutoring centers need a deterministic oracle that turns a messy weight table into one clear target score without rebuilding a spreadsheet for every appointment. Learning-management and student-success products can call the same pure module from server jobs or edge workers so dashboards show a live “score needed on remaining work” without shipping a separate grade-engine.
Scholarship and eligibility checkers often care only about staying above a fixed pass threshold rather than maximizing GPA; this capability answers that binary planning question with weights, not with a full transcript model. Failed validation does not consume balance.
What you can do with it
Advisor walk-in math checks
Turn a syllabus weight table and unofficial grades into one achievable-or-impossible answer during a short advising appointment, without a fragile personal spreadsheet.
FAQ
What if I already have enough points to pass?
You still see the raw minimum for transparency.
Do the weights have to sum to 100?
No. Weights need only be positive and consistent.
What score do I need on my final exam to pass the course?
Enter each graded item with its weight, the weight of the final and the pass mark. With items averaging 78.92 over 60% of the course and a 40% final, the answer is 56.63 to end at 70.
What does it mean when the result says passing is impossible?
It means that even full marks on all the remaining work would leave your average below the pass mark. The maximum score on what is left is 100 unless you change it.
Does it give me a letter grade?
No. It answers one question: the minimum uniform score on the remaining weight that keeps you at the pass mark. It does not assign letters or apply any curve, so use your syllabus for those.

Technical notes
The same pure logic powers the free browser tool and the API path, so homework planners, LMS plugins, and counseling dashboards never disagree on the number that matters.
How the minimum score on remaining work is derived
A course grade is a weighted average: each completed item contributes score times weight to an earned-points total, and the overall average is earned points divided by total weight. The calculator does not invent letter grades or curve policies; it answers the pure arithmetic question that every syllabus weight table implies. You choose the same units for scores and threshold—usually zero through one hundred—and the weights need only be positive and consistent with each other, whether they sum to one hundred percent or to any other course-total convention. When some weight remains ungraded, call that remaining_weight and let the unknown score on it be s. Passing means the finished average is at least the threshold T: (earned_points + s times remaining_weight) divided by (completed_weight + remaining_weight) is greater than or equal to T. Rearranging for s yields the closed form min_score equals (T times total_weight minus earned_points) divided by remaining_weight. If that value is zero or negative, even scoring nothing on the leftover weight still meets the pass mark, so the status is already_passing. If the value exceeds score_max (one hundred by default), no attainable score on the remaining work can hit T, so the status is impossible. Otherwise the status is achievable and min_score_needed is the floor you must clear on the leftover weight if that weight is scored uniformly.
Input contract, response fields, and validation rules
POST a JSON body with completed as an array of objects each carrying a finite score and a strictly positive weight; the array may be empty when nothing has been graded yet. remaining_weight is a required positive finite number describing how much of the course is still open. passing_threshold is the overall average you must reach. Optional score_max defaults to one hundred and is used only to decide impossibility; optional decimals (zero through six, default two) controls half-up rounding on averages and the reported minimum. On success the body echoes weights and threshold, earned_points as the weighted sum of completed work, current_average of completed items only (null when completed is empty), min_score_needed, points_short (how many weighted points you are below the threshold target before scoring remaining work), boolean flags already_passing, impossible, and can_pass, a status string in already_passing, achievable, or impossible, plus a short formula string for display. Missing required fields, non-finite numbers, non-positive remaining_weight or row weights, more than fifty completed rows, or decimals outside zero through six fail with invalid_input and are not billed. Pair this endpoint with your own letter-grade map if your school uses A–F cutoffs; the numeric pass line is the only policy this tool encodes.
Where a pass-line remaining-score calculator earns its keep
Content sites that rank for minimum passing grade calculator benefit from a free in-browser path that matches the paid API byte-for-byte on the same analytic module. Keep payloads small, pin rounded fields in tests, and you get reproducible pass-line targets for study plans, LMS plugins, and counseling workflows without standing up a full student-information system.
Integration use cases
Mid-term study prioritization
Enter banked quiz and homework scores with weights, set remaining_weight to the final and projects left, and read the minimum score needed to clear your school’s pass mark.
LMS and success-dashboard targets
Automate a live “points still needed on remaining work” field from completed grade rows and the course pass threshold using the same deterministic API contract.
Technical questions
How do I calculate the minimum score needed to pass?
Send completed rows of score and weight, remaining_weight, and passing_threshold. The API returns min_score_needed = (threshold × total_weight − earned_points) / remaining_weight, plus status flags.
When is passing marked impossible?
If the minimum score required on remaining work exceeds score_max (default 100), status is impossible and can_pass is false. Raise score_max only when your scale allows scores above 100.
What does the minimum passing grade calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
