What makes up a lease buyout
Buying out a lease takes more cash than the residual value alone. The residual is the amount set in your contract. On top of it comes the purchase option fee, and sales tax is charged on the residual and the fee together. Any other fees are then added as they are, without tax. With a residual of 18,000, a fee of 500 and tax at 8%, the tax is 1,480 and the total buyout is 19,980, nearly two thousand more than the residual on its own.
Getting the total right
Take the residual straight from your contract rather than estimating it, and check whether a purchase option fee applies. Apply the tax rate to the residual plus the fee, not to the residual alone, or the tax will come out too low. Keep extra charges in the other fees line so they are added without tax. If a part does not apply, enter zero instead of leaving out the whole calculation. The result is rounded once, to the decimals you choose, so you get a single figure to plan the payment around.
FAQ
Other languages?
EN-only delivery; Nitro hydrates the other seven locales.
Is sales tax charged on the purchase option fee too?
In this calculation, yes: the tax rate applies to the residual plus the purchase option fee. With 18,000 and 500 at 8%, the tax is 1,480. Other fees are added afterwards without tax.
Where do I find the residual value?
In your lease contract. It is the residual value written into the agreement, so take it from there rather than estimating it, because every other part of the total is built on it.
What should go in the other fees?
Any further charge you must pay to complete the buyout that is not part of the taxed amount. It is added to the total exactly as entered, without sales tax; leave it at zero if there is none.
Can I leave out the tax or the fee?
Yes. Enter zero for any part that does not apply, such as a fee your lessor does not charge or a tax rate of zero. The total is then simply the remaining parts added together.

Technical notes
The calculator is free in the browser, deterministic, and identical on the API path. Inputs are validated before arithmetic so invalid payloads fail with invalid_input. Half-up rounding is applied once from raw IEEE values when decimals are requested. Use the same JSON contract from spreadsheets, CMS hooks, automation, or teaching demos.
How it works
Total cash to buy out a lease: residual + fees + tax. total = residual + fee + tax%×(residual+fee) + other. No network calls, random seeds, or server state are required. Failed jobs are not billed. Search intent is matched with precise English keywords. Optional fields document defaults. The calculator is free in the browser, deterministic, and identical on the API path. Technical questions
Is the browser widget free?
Yes. Tier A runs client-side with the same core as the API.
Does it call the network?
No. Computation is local and deterministic.
What happens on bad input?
The handler throws invalid_input; failed jobs are not billed.
Can I use the API?
Yes. Send the same JSON documented in params.
