A hoop house, also sold as a high tunnel or polytunnel, is a semicircular greenhouse whose ribs are spaced bows of pipe covered with greenhouse polyethylene. Growers, homesteaders, and school gardens need two quantities before they buy film or cut pipe: how many hoops the frame needs, and how many square units of plastic will cover the tunnel plus both end walls.

How hoop count and plastic film area are computed

A Quonset hoop house is modelled as a right half-cylinder whose diameter is the span between the two ground rails. The house length runs perpendicular to those hoops, from one end wall to the other. Each hoop is a semicircle of radius equal to half the width, so the developed arc from rail to rail is pi times that radius, which is pi times width over two.

A forty-eight by twelve house on four-unit centres therefore needs thirteen bows and a geometric film area of three hundred twenty-four pi square units in the same unit as the inputs. The model does not add a burial apron, a wiggle-wire overlap, or a ten-percent waste factor; those multipliers are job-specific and would hide the geometric take-off. Gothic or peaked frames use a different arc and are out of scope.

Where a hoop house materials calculator earns its keep

Market gardeners and homesteaders estimate polyethylene and bow pipe before they order a roll of four-year greenhouse film or a bundle of galvanized EMT, so a twelve-by-forty-eight backyard house is quoted from length, width, and spacing instead of from a neighbour's leftover roll. Nursery managers covering a high tunnel for winter greens, livestock keepers throwing a small hoop barn over a calf pen, and curriculum authors teaching half-cylinder surface area all want the same three-input contract.

If you later need gothic peak geometry, a burial-apron allowance as a first-class field, or a conversion from feet to metres, treat those as separate search intents rather than overloading this hoop-house landing. The tool is a Quonset take-off, not a substitute for a snow-load table, a wiggle-wire channel schedule, or a mill ticket that already weighs the film roll. Failed validation is not billed, which keeps exploratory scripts cheap when you deliberately send a zero width to verify error handling.

Order greenhouse film for a backyard hoop house

Homesteaders enter length, width, and hoop spacing to size a polyethylene roll and a bow-pipe cut list for a Quonset house before the first hoop is bent.

Classroom half-cylinder surface area

Instructors and LMS auto-graders verify that a semicircular hoop house of known length and width yields the expected film area and integer bow count.

Does the hoop house calculator assume a semicircular (Quonset) frame?

Yes. Each hoop is a semicircle of diameter equal to the span width. Gothic or peaked frames use a different arc and are out of scope; do not send a peak height and expect this identity to match a gothic take-off.

How many hoops does a 48 foot hoop house need?

With hoops every 4 feet, 13 hoops: one at each end wall and one at every 4 foot mark along the length. Closer spacing adds hoops and makes the frame stiffer.

How much plastic do I need to cover a 12 by 48 foot hoop house?

Just over 1000 square feet. That covers the curved roof along the full 48 feet plus the two half-circle end walls of a house 12 feet wide.

Does the film area include extra for burying the edges?

No. It is the bare surface of the tunnel and end walls. Add your own allowance for a buried edge, overlaps at the fastening channels and any waste before you order the roll.

Can I work in metres instead of feet?

Yes. Use one unit for length, width and hoop spacing, whether metres, feet or yards. The film area then comes out in that unit squared and the hoop pipe in that unit of length.

This hoop house calculator takes three strictly positive lengths in one unit—house length along the row of hoops, span width between the ground rails, and center-to-center hoop spacing—and returns hoop_count and cover_area for a Quonset (semicircular) model. Missing, zero, or negative dimensions fail with invalid_input and are not billed.

How hoop count and plastic film area are computed

Greenhouse film that drapes over the bows must cover that arc along the full length, which is a rectangle of area hoop_arc_length times length, or pi times width times length over two. Each end wall is a semicircular disk; two of them together equal a full circle of radius width over two, so end_wall_area is pi times width squared over four. Adding those pieces gives the cover_area this calculator returns: pi times width times length over two, plus pi times width squared over four, which factors as pi times width over four, times two times length plus width. Hoops stand at both ends and at every hoop_spacing along the length, so hoop_count is the ceiling of length divided by hoop_spacing, plus one. All three inputs must share one linear unit so cover_area is that unit squared and hoop pipe is that unit of length.

What you send, which units to use, and how validation fails

Use one consistent length unit for all three fields: feet with feet, metres with metres, yards with yards. Mixing metres of length with feet of width would be meaningless, so the contract leaves conversion to the caller. Upper and lower limits keep intermediate products finite: each field must be at least 1e-15 and at most 1e12. Send three required numeric fields. length is a finite positive number for the house run from one end wall to the other; aliases L, house_length, and house_len are accepted. width is a finite positive number for the span between ground rails, which is also the diameter of each semicircular hoop; aliases W, span, and house_width are recognized. hoop_spacing is a finite positive number for the centre-to-centre distance between consecutive ribs; aliases spacing, S, hoop_space, and rib_spacing are accepted so a spreadsheet column named spacing does not need a rename. Strings that parse as finite numbers are accepted the same as JSON numbers. Cover area is then that unit squared and hoop_pipe_length is that unit of bow pipe. On success the response echoes the cleaned inputs, publishes hoop_radius as half the width, hoop_arc_length as pi times that radius, hoop_count as the integer bow total, hoop_pipe_length as count times arc, tunnel_cover_area for the half-cylinder, end_wall_area for both semicircular ends, cover_area as their sum, and formula restating the identities. A forty-eight by twelve house with hoop_spacing four yields thirteen hoops and cover_area equal to three hundred twenty-four pi. Validation failures name the offending field so a form can highlight length when someone types zero, or hoop_spacing when a sheet leaked a negative. Failed tasks return invalid_input and do not consume prepaid balance. Successful API calls use the published base of $0.002 per item.

Where a hoop house materials calculator earns its keep

School gardens, community farms, and extension desks need a hoop_count and cover_area that match the public calculator when a volunteer pastes the same three numbers into a storefront. Pin goldens in tests: forty-eight by twelve on four-unit centres must stay thirteen hoops, and cover_area must stay three hundred twenty-four pi after twelve-decimal rounding. Round-trip checks are easy: recompute ceil of length over spacing plus one by hand, add the half-cylinder and two semicircles, and confirm hoop_count and cover_area match.

School-garden and extension take-off

Teachers and extension desks convert a planned twelve-by-forty-eight tunnel into hoop_count and cover_area so the volunteer list and the public calculator quote the same materials.

How do I calculate plastic film and hoops for a hoop house?

Send positive length, width, and hoop_spacing in one length unit. The API returns hoop_count = ceil(length / hoop_spacing) + 1 and cover_area = (π × width × length / 2) + (π × width² / 4) for a Quonset half-cylinder plus both semicircular end walls.

What happens if a dimension is zero or negative?

The task fails with invalid_input. Length, width, and hoop_spacing must all be positive numbers; a non-positive dimension cannot be a physical hoop house and is not billed.

Does cover_area include extra film for burying the edges?

No. cover_area is the geometric tunnel plus both end walls. Add a burial apron, wiggle-wire overlap, or a waste factor after the take-off so a quote stays transparent; baking two feet of apron would be wrong when you work in metres.

What does the hoop house calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
