Students often need a hard number for what their grade point average becomes after withdrawing from one course before transcript freeze, scholarship renewal, or degree audit. Hand math is easy to botch when quality points, credit hours, and a rounded GPA all interact. This GPA after dropping a course calculator takes your current average, your total graded credits, and the letter grade plus credit hours of the class you plan to drop, then subtracts that course's quality points and credits from the running totals and returns the new GPA. You can optionally pass exact quality points when you already know them so reverse-engineering from a rounded transcript line does not introduce a few thousandths of error.

What GPA after a course drop means and how the subtraction works

Grade point average on a standard four-point scale is total quality points divided by total graded credit hours. When a school allows a course withdrawal that removes the grade from the GPA computation, the transcript math is exactly subtraction: remove that course's quality points from the numerator and its credits from the denominator, then divide again.

If you only know the rounded current GPA and total credits, quality points are recovered as current GPA times total credits, which is the usual what-if estimate counselors use before the official office re-runs the full course list. Dropping a low grade usually raises the average; dropping a high grade usually lowers it; dropping an F removes credits without removing quality points and therefore almost always improves GPA. This capability models a single graded course leave-out on an unweighted four-point table.

It does not invent institutional rules for W versus WF codes, pass/fail exclusions, or mid-semester incomplete policies—you supply the numeric effect of the course you are removing.

Where a GPA-after-drop calculator earns its keep

Academic advising portals embed a GPA after dropping a course tool so students can compare withdrawing a struggling class against staying enrolled before add-drop deadlines. Degree-audit and LMS plugins expose the same pure function so what-if planners match the public calculator byte-for-byte. Failed validation does not consume balance.

The capability is intentionally narrow: it subtracts one course from GPA totals on a standard letter table; it does not forecast future terms, apply grade replacement policies for retakes, or decide whether your registrar codes a withdrawal as GPA-neutral.

Student what-if before withdraw deadline

Enter current GPA, total credits, and the grade and credits of a class you may drop to see the projected average before the official deadline.

Advisor and scholarship eligibility checks

Counselors and compliance staff recompute projected GPA after a petitioned course drop for scholarship, athletic, or probation paperwork.

Which letter grades are supported?

The standard unweighted 4.0 plus/minus set: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, and F. Pass/fail and institutional W codes are outside this calculator; model only graded courses you are removing from the average.

How is the GPA after a dropped course calculated?

Your quality points are your current GPA times your total credits, 210 in the example. The dropped course's points, 6 for a 3-credit C, are subtracted, and what is left is divided by the remaining 57 credits.

Does dropping a course always raise my GPA?

No. Dropping a low grade usually raises your average and dropping a high grade usually lowers it. Dropping an F removes credits without removing any quality points, so it almost always improves your GPA.

Why would I enter my exact quality points?

Because the GPA on a transcript is rounded, and multiplying it by your credits can be off by a few thousandths. If you know the exact total of quality points, enter it and the new GPA avoids that small error.

Does the calculator know my school's withdrawal rules?

No. It does not decide whether your registrar leaves a withdrawn course out of the GPA, and it does not apply pass or fail rules, incompletes or grade replacement for retakes. Confirm the policy first, then enter the course to remove.

What GPA after a course drop means and how the subtraction works

Quality points for one course are the letter-grade point value times that course's credits: an A is four point zero, A-minus three point seven, B-plus three point three, B three point zero, B-minus two point seven, C-plus two point three, C two point zero, C-minus one point seven, D-plus one point three, D one point zero, and F zero. Empty or impossible inputs fail with invalid_input so automation can tell a bad form row from a legitimate low average.

Input contract, formula, rounding, and response shape

Optional decimals is an integer from zero to six controlling half-up rounding of GPA and quality-point outputs, default two. POST a JSON body with four required fields. current_gpa is a finite number from zero through four inclusive on the unweighted scale; aliases gpa and before_gpa are accepted. total_credits is the finite count of graded credit hours before the withdrawal and must be strictly greater than dropped_credits; aliases credits, credit_hours, and total_credit_hours work. dropped_grade is a letter from the closed set A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, F; aliases grade and course_grade map to the same field. dropped_credits is the finite credit load of the course being removed, strictly greater than zero and strictly less than total_credits; aliases course_credits and withdraw_credits are accepted. Optional quality_points supplies the exact numerator before the drop; when omitted it defaults to current_gpa times total_credits. On success the body echoes current_gpa, total_credits, quality_points, dropped_grade, dropped_credits, dropped_grade_points, and dropped_quality_points; it then reports remaining_credits, remaining_quality_points, gpa_after_drop, gpa_change as new minus old, decimals, and a formula string restating the contract. Example: current GPA three point five with sixty credits and no explicit quality points yields two hundred ten quality points; withdrawing a three-credit C removes six quality points and three credits, leaving two hundred four over fifty-seven for a gpa_after_drop of three point five eight when decimals is two. If dropped_credits would leave zero remaining credits, if remaining quality points would go negative, or if any required field is missing or non-finite, the task fails with invalid_input and is not billed.

Where a GPA-after-drop calculator earns its keep

Scholarship and athletic compliance staff batch-call the API when a student petitions to drop a low grade and need a documented projected average for eligibility forms. Keep requests small, pin the rounded gpa_after_drop field in tests, and you get reproducible leave-out math for counseling scripts, mobile helpers, and edge workers without standing up a full student-information system.

LMS and degree-audit what-if widgets

Portals call the same pure API the free browser tool uses so on-campus planners never disagree with the public calculator.

How is GPA recalculated after dropping a course?

Quality points start as quality_points or current_gpa × total_credits. The dropped course contributes grade_points(dropped_grade) × dropped_credits. New GPA is (quality_points − dropped quality points) ÷ (total_credits − dropped_credits).

Why provide optional quality_points?

Transcripts often print a rounded GPA. Passing exact quality points avoids reverse-engineering error from that rounded line. If you omit quality_points, the API uses current_gpa × total_credits.

Can I drop all remaining credits?

No. dropped_credits must be strictly less than total_credits so at least one graded credit remains. Zero remaining credits would make GPA undefined and fails with invalid_input.

What does the GPA after dropping a course tool cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
