GMROI calculator

See how much gross profit each unit of money tied up in stock earns: 120,000 of gross margin on 40,000 of average inventory at cost is a GMROI of 3, or 300%. Rank categories and vendors by inventory productivity. Free in your browser.

Retailers and wholesale operators need a single number that answers whether inventory is earning its keep. Gross margin return on inventory investment—GMROI—divides period gross margin dollars by average inventory held at cost, so you see how many dollars of gross profit each dollar of stock produced. This calculator takes those two inputs, applies the classic GMROI identity with half-up rounding you control, and returns the ratio, the percent form, and the margin-per-inventory-dollar field used in merchandising dashboards. Use it for category reviews, open-to-buy planning, vendor scorecards, classroom retail math, and automation that must match spreadsheet checks byte for byte.

What GMROI means and how the formula works

Gross margin return on inventory investment measures how productively capital tied up in stock converts into gross profit. Gross margin dollars are sales minus cost of goods sold for a chosen period—the absolute currency profit before operating expenses. Average inventory cost is the typical investment in inventory at cost over that same period, often the simple average of beginning and ending inventory or a multi-period average when stocks swing hard.

The identity is GMROI equals gross margin dollars divided by average inventory cost. A result of three means each dollar of average inventory investment returned three dollars of gross margin in the period; a result of one means inventory only recovered its cost in gross margin terms; a result below one signals that margin dollars did not cover the capital parked on the shelf.

GMROI is related to but not the same as inventory turnover or gross margin percent alone: high turnover with thin margins can still underperform low turnover with rich margins, and GMROI folds both effects into one efficiency ratio.

Where a GMROI calculator earns its keep

Merchants and inventory planners use a GMROI calculator when category reviews need a comparable efficiency score across SKUs that differ in price point and turn rate. Open-to-buy and assortment tools rank vendors by margin dollars produced per dollar of average stock so buying decisions favor productive inventory, not just high sales volume. Educators and LMS platforms need a deterministic oracle for retail-math homework that asks students to compute GMROI from gross profit and average inventory—including the edge case of negative margin students often mishandle by taking absolute value.

Failed validation does not consume balance. Keep average inventory cost positive, pin the rounded fields in tests, and you get reproducible GMROI figures for spreadsheets, n8n flows, and edge workers without standing up a retail-finance library of your own.

Category efficiency review

Convert period gross margin and average inventory at cost into GMROI so categories rank by inventory productivity, not just sales volume.

Vendor and SKU scorecards

Normalize many items to the same GMROI ratio for open-to-buy meetings and assortment decisions.

What does a GMROI of 3 mean?

Each dollar of average inventory at cost produced three dollars of gross margin in the period—strong inventory productivity relative to a GMROI near 1.

Can gross margin dollars be negative?

Yes. A negative gross margin yields a negative GMROI, which flags that product losses did not cover the capital held in stock.

Why must average inventory cost be greater than zero?

GMROI divides by average inventory investment. Zero or negative inventory cost makes the ratio undefined or meaningless for this metric.

How do I work out average inventory cost?

Use the typical stock investment at cost over the same period as the margin. A common choice is beginning plus ending inventory divided by two, or an average of several periods when stock levels swing a lot.

Is GMROI the same as inventory turnover?

No. Turnover counts how often stock sells, and margin percent how much each sale keeps. GMROI combines both, so a fast-selling line with thin margins can still score below a slow line with rich margins.

What GMROI means and how the formula works

This endpoint does not fetch POS or ERP data; it only computes the ratio once you supply both numbers.

Input contract, rounding, validation, and worked examples

Gross margin dollars may be negative when the period loses money on product; the resulting GMROI is then negative and still useful as a warning signal. Average inventory cost must be strictly greater than zero because dividing by zero or a non-positive stock base is undefined for this metric. Example: gross margin fifty thousand and average inventory twenty-five thousand yields gmroi two. Example: equal positive values yield gmroi one. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers: gross_margin_dollars and average_inventory_cost. An optional decimals integer from zero through twelve (default six) controls half-up rounding applied once to gmroi, gmroi_percent, and margin_per_inventory_dollar from the raw IEEE quotient; never re-inject a rounded ratio into another formula step if you chain tools yourself. Missing fields, empty strings, non-finite values, and non-positive average inventory cost fail with invalid_input naming the issue, and those failures are not billed. Example: gross margin one hundred twenty thousand and average inventory forty thousand yields gmroi three, gmroi_percent three hundred, and margin_per_inventory_dollar three. Pair the response with your own category and season notes; this endpoint measures the ratio only and does not annualize, currency-convert, or adjust for shrinkage unless you fold those adjustments into the two inputs first.

How is GMROI calculated?

GMROI = gross_margin_dollars ÷ average_inventory_cost. The API returns that ratio as gmroi, the same figure as gmroi_percent, and margin_per_inventory_dollar (identical to gmroi).

What does the GMROI calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
