English ordinal gematria is the simplest letter-to-number map used in English: A equals 1, B equals 2, and so on through Z equals 26. Researchers, puzzle solvers, and students who look up a gematria calculator usually want this ordinal total for a single word, not Hebrew mispar hechrachi and not a reduced numerology digit. This English gematria calculator accepts a string of letters, scores each character by its alphabetic position, and returns the integer total of those values. Mixed case is allowed; A and a both count as 1.

How English ordinal gematria scores a word

English ordinal gematria, also called simple English gematria or the alphabetic ordinal cipher, assigns every Latin letter a value equal to its position in the twenty-six-letter alphabet. A equals one, B equals two, C equals three, continuing without gaps until Z equals twenty-six. The gematria of a word is the sum of those values, left in full rather than reduced by digit addition.

That is the whole algorithm: there is no hundreds row, no final-form exception, and no single-digit name number. The mapping is therefore different from Hebrew mispar hechrachi, which scores alef through tav on a one-to-four-hundred table, and different from Chaldean numerology, which remaps letters onto a one-through-eight chart and then reduces. A classroom example is the word love: L contributes twelve, O fifteen, V twenty-two, and E five, totaling fifty-four.

ABC totals six. Because each value is a fixed offset from the uppercase character code, the same spelling always yields the same integer on every runtime. This calculator implements only that English ordinal contract.

It does not compute reverse ordinal where A equals twenty-six, Jewish gematria on the alef-bet, or Pythagorean name numbers that wrap the alphabet into one through nine; those systems have their own landings and would cannibalize this search if mixed here.

Where English letter sums come in handy

Literary and religious studies groups working in Latin letters rather than Hebrew want ordinal sums they can batch over a word list without mixing alef-bet tables. Puzzle authors and alternate-reality designers encode clues as letter sums and need a deterministic oracle that rejects a phrase with a space instead of silently dropping the blank. Educators teaching comparative number-letter systems use the breakdown array to show how English ordinal values differ from Chaldean and Pythagorean maps on the same spelling.

On this page the work runs entirely in your browser. Treat the total as a traditional letter-sum, not as medical, financial, or legal advice, and always show the breakdown when transparency matters to your readers.

Classroom letter-value lessons

Show students the per-letter breakdown for an English word so they can see how ordinal gematria differs from Hebrew and Chaldean charts.

How is English ordinal gematria calculated?

The calculator returns the sum of those values. Mixed case is allowed; a and A both count as 1.

How is this different from Hebrew gematria?

Hebrew gematria scores alef–tav on a 1–400 table (mispar hechrachi). This landing is English ordinal only: Latin A–Z positions, no hundreds row, no final forms.

Does the calculator reduce the total to a single digit?

No. English ordinal gematria leaves the raw sum. Digit reduction belongs to name-numerology systems such as Chaldean, which are a different search and a different capability.

What is the gematria value of love?

Love totals 54 in English ordinal gematria: L is 12, O is 15, V is 22 and E is 5. A shorter check is ABC, which totals 6.

Can I enter a phrase with spaces or hyphens?

No. Every character must be an English letter, so spaces, hyphens, apostrophes, digits and accented letters are rejected instead of being silently skipped. Score each word on its own and add the totals if you need a phrase sum.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

Any digit, space, hyphen, apostrophe, or other non-alphabetic character fails with invalid_input instead of a silent partial sum, so automated checks never hide a typo.

How English ordinal gematria scores a word

The formula field on every success payload restates A equals one through Z equals twenty-six so tests, gradebooks, and documentation can quote the same rule the engine uses without opening the source.

Input contract, response shape, and invalid input

Uppercase and lowercase letters are equivalent: a and A both contribute one, and the per-letter breakdown reports each letter in uppercase for a stable display. A missing field, a non-string type, an empty string, and a string longer than two hundred fifty-six characters are also rejected, and the error message names text so the form can mark the control. Example: Grok yields G equals seven, R eighteen, O fifteen, K eleven, and total fifty-one. To score a word, POST a JSON object with the required string field text. The aliases word, input, value, and s are accepted so spreadsheets and SDK clients can keep their existing column names. Unlike name-numerology tools that skip spaces, this endpoint is strict: every character must be an English letter. A space, hyphen, apostrophe, digit, punctuation mark, or accented character is a non-alphabetic character and fails with invalid_input, which is not billed. On success the body includes text as the original string, total as the integer sum, letter_count as the number of letters scored, letters as an ordered array of objects with letter, value, and position, method set to english_ordinal, and formula restating the A-through-Z rule. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical result inside an automated pipeline. Nothing is stored after the response returns, and the path uses no clock, no randomness, and no network, so continuous-integration goldens stay byte-stable across workers.

Where an English gematria API earns its keep

Through the API each successful sum costs $0.002; failed validation is not charged; no personal data is retained after the response. That split—free interactive exploration and a priced identical API—lets you move from a classroom demo to a pipeline without changing the integer.

Puzzle and cipher checks

Score a clue word with A=1 through Z=26 and compare the total against an expected integer without skipping spaces or inventing a partial sum.

Batch scoring for word lists

Call the API from a script to total many candidate spellings with a pinned english_ordinal contract at $0.002 per successful request.

What characters are allowed in the word?

Only alphabetic A–Z letters. Spaces, digits, hyphens, apostrophes, punctuation, and accented characters fail with invalid_input and are not billed.

What does the gematria calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
