Forex pip value calculator
Know what a one-pip move is worth before you trade: 100,000 units of EUR/USD at 1.085 make each pip worth 10 in the quote currency, about 9.2166 in the base currency. Set the pip size for yen pairs. Free in your browser.

This forex pip value calculator turns a trade size and a current exchange rate into the cash value of a one-pip price move on a currency pair. Retail and professional traders size risk in pips, yet the money that actually moves in the account depends on how large the position is, how wide one pip is for that pair, and where the market is trading right now. Enter position size in base-currency units, the quote rate as quote units per one base unit, and optionally the pip size when you are on a JPY pair or a non-standard tick. The engine applies the closed identities pip value in quote currency equals position size times pip size, and pip value in base currency equals that product divided by the quote rate.
What a pip is worth and how base and quote values relate
A pip is the conventional smallest price increment quoted on a forex pair: typically zero point zero zero zero one in price terms for pairs such as EUR/USD or GBP/USD, and zero point zero one for pairs that quote the Japanese yen as the counter currency. Knowing that a trade moved three pips is not enough to know how much cash changed hands, because a one-lot position and a micro-lot position experience different dollar or euro impact for the same pip move.
To express that same one-pip move in the base currency of the pair, divide by the current exchange rate, which is how many quote units one base unit buys. Nothing here estimates future prices, implied volatility, or swap; it only converts a pip width and a position into money at a rate you supply.
Where pip-value lookups fit in trading, teaching, and software
Discretionary traders use a pip value calculator before they set a stop distance so that a planned ten-pip stop on a chosen lot size maps to a known dollar risk rather than a vague sense of market noise. Systematic desks and retail bots convert signal-level pip targets into cash P and L assumptions when they size orders, build scenario tables, or check that a strategy’s expected move still fits a fixed risk budget.
Educators and prop-firm curricula need a deterministic oracle that never silently treats a yen pair as a four-decimal major, so students see why the same notional can be worth roughly ten dollars per pip on EUR/USD and a different base amount on USD/JPY once the rate and pip width change. Keep requests small, pin the rounded fields in tests, and you get reproducible pip cash figures for worksheets, LMS plugins, and edge workers without standing up a market-data stack just to multiply size by tick width.
What you can do with it
Pre-trade risk sizing
Convert a planned stop in pips into cash risk by multiplying pip value by stop distance before you send the order.
Classroom and prop-firm drills
Generate reproducible pip-value answers for majors and JPY pairs so students see how size, pip width, and rate interact.
FAQ
Does the calculator fetch live exchange rates?
The engine is pure arithmetic with no network calls, so results stay deterministic for tests and offline worksheets.
What pip size should I use for yen pairs?
Use 0.01 for pairs that quote the Japanese yen as the second currency, such as USD/JPY. Most other pairs, like EUR/USD or GBP/USD, use 0.0001, which is the default.
How do I turn a 10-pip stop into money?
Multiply the pip value by the number of pips. If one pip is worth 10 in the quote currency, a planned 10-pip stop on that position risks 100 in that same currency.
Why does the pip value change with the exchange rate?
In the quote currency it does not: it is just position size times pip size. Expressed in the base currency, it is divided by the current rate, so it moves as the market moves.
Does a smaller lot change the pip value?
Yes, in proportion. A mini lot of 10,000 units is a tenth of a standard lot of 100,000, so each pip is worth a tenth as much at the same pip size.

What a pip is worth and how base and quote values relate
The quote-currency cash of a single pip is simply the product of the number of base units you hold and the pip size in price units: one hundred thousand units times zero point zero zero zero one equals ten units of the quote currency on a standard major pair. That second figure is the primary pip_value this calculator returns, because many risk models and margin conversations speak in terms of the base notional. The response also echoes position_size, quote_rate, and pip_size, reports pip_value_quote and pip_value_base side by side, and includes a short formula string so UIs can show the identity next to the number.
Input contract, defaults, rounding, and error behaviour
Example: one hundred thousand units of EUR against USD at one point zero eight five with the default pip size yields a quote-side pip value of ten US dollars and a base-side pip value of about nine point two one six six euros. POST a JSON body with two required finite positive numbers: position_size, the trade size in units of the base currency, and quote_rate, the current market rate as quote per base. Optional pip_size defaults to zero point zero zero zero one so majors work without extra fields; set it to zero point zero one for USD/JPY and similar yen pairs, or to any positive tick width your venue uses. Aliases are accepted for spreadsheet and form convenience: units, size, trade_size, quantity, and notional map to position_size; exchange_rate, rate, price, and fx_rate map to quote_rate; pip, one_pip, and pip_decimal map to pip_size. Missing fields, empty strings, non-finite values, and zero or negative size, rate, or pip size fail with invalid_input and are not billed. On success the body returns the normalized inputs, pip_value equal to the base-currency result, the explicit pip_value_base and pip_value_quote fields, the formula string, and the precision used. Pair the free browser path with the priced API when you need identical arithmetic inside a risk engine without re-implementing the divides yourself.

Technical questions
How is forex pip value calculated?
pip_value_quote = position_size × pip_size (quote currency). pip_value_base = (pip_size / quote_rate) × position_size (base currency). The primary pip_value field is the base-currency result.
What pip size should I use for JPY pairs?
Use pip_size 0.01 for pairs such as USD/JPY. Most other pairs use the default 0.0001.
Is position_size in lots or units?
Units of the base currency. One standard lot is typically 100000 units; a mini lot is 10000. Convert lots to units before calling if your platform quotes lots.
What does the forex pip value calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
