Florida overtime calculator

At 20 an hour, a 50-hour week in Florida has 10 overtime hours paid at 30, which is 300 of overtime pay on top of 800 for the first 40 hours. Florida follows the federal weekly rule, with no daily overtime. Free in your browser.

Florida overtime for most non-exempt hourly employees follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act rather than a separate, more generous state schedule. Hours after forty in a single workweek are paid at one and one-half times the regular hourly wage; Florida does not impose California-style daily overtime after eight hours, nor a statutory double-time rate after twelve. This Florida overtime calculator takes a regular hourly wage and the hours worked in the workweek, isolates the hours beyond forty, multiplies those overtime hours by one and one-half times the wage, and returns the overtime earnings as a dollar amount you can drop onto a timesheet or payroll worksheet.

What Florida overtime means: time-and-a-half after forty hours in a workweek

Florida overtime for non-exempt employees is a weekly federal rule, not a daily state schedule. The Fair Labor Standards Act, which Florida follows without adding a more generous state overtime statute, requires time-and-a-half pay for hours actually worked beyond forty in a single workweek. The first forty hours in that workweek are straight time at the regular hourly wage; every hour after forty is overtime at one and one-half times that wage.

Unlike California, Florida does not pay daily overtime after eight hours in a workday, does not impose double time after twelve hours, and does not apply a seventh-consecutive-day premium. A ten-hour Tuesday and a six-hour Friday are treated the same as long as the weekly total is the quantity that crosses forty. If hours worked are forty or fewer, overtime earnings are zero because no hour has yet crossed the federal weekly threshold.

Employers and employees in hospitality, agriculture, construction, and healthcare across Florida use this weekly split because it matches the statute they are actually under, not a more complex sister-state schedule.

Fifty-hour Florida hospitality weeks

Turn a known hourly wage and a 50-hour restaurant or hotel week into time-and-a-half overtime earnings under the FLSA forty-hour rule.

Construction and Saturday hours

See overtime pay when a Florida crew works past forty hours in the week, without applying California daily overtime that Florida does not require.

How is Florida overtime calculated from hourly wage and hours worked?

Florida follows the federal FLSA weekly rule; there is no daily overtime or statutory double time.

What happens if hours worked are negative?

Florida overtime cannot be computed from a negative number of hours, and failed validation is not billed.

Does Florida require overtime after eight hours in a day?

No. Florida does not have a daily overtime statute. Only hours beyond forty in the workweek are overtime at time-and-a-half, unless a contract or policy is more generous.

Is there Florida double time after twelve hours?

Florida law does not impose double time. This calculator uses the FLSA 1.5× weekly premium only. An employer may still pay more by policy or union agreement.

What does the calculator show besides overtime pay?

Regular pay for the first 40 hours, the overtime hours and rate, the overtime premium and gross pay for the week. That lets you check a whole timesheet or payroll line, not just the overtime amount.

Negative hours worked are rejected with invalid_input because a negative duration cannot produce lawful overtime pay. The same pure arithmetic powers the free browser tool and the API path, so a restaurant manager in Tampa and a script that batch-checks hospitality weeks never disagree on the overtime line.

What Florida overtime means: time-and-a-half after forty hours in a workweek

This calculator isolates overtime hours as the amount by which hours_worked exceeds forty, then returns overtime earnings as one point five times the hourly wage times those overtime hours. If hours worked are negative, the request fails rather than inventing a negative paycheck.

Input contract, overtime hours, response shape, and rejected negative hours

Zero hours is allowed and yields zero overtime pay. A wage below zero, a week longer than seven twenty-four-hour days, or a missing field also fail. Money fields are rounded to two decimal places; hour fields use six. Optional output keys are omitted rather than set to null. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers. hourly_wage is the regular rate before the Florida overtime premium; aliases wage, rate, hourly_rate, and pay_rate are accepted so payroll forms can reuse the same contract. hours_worked is the total hours actually worked in the workweek, at most one hundred sixty-eight; aliases hours, weekly_hours, hours_per_week, and week_hours map to the same value. Overtime hours are derived, not supplied: they equal hours_worked minus forty when that difference is positive, and zero otherwise. Numeric strings that parse as finite decimals are accepted; empty strings, NaN, and Infinity fail with invalid_input naming the field. If hours_worked is negative the request is rejected with a message that Florida overtime cannot be computed from a negative number of hours—that is the hard contract of this calculator, and those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes the wage and hours, reports weekly_threshold always forty, overtime_multiplier always one point five, regular_hours, overtime_hours, overtime_rate, regular_pay, overtime_pay as the overtime earnings, overtime_premium as the half-time increment above straight time on overtime hours, gross_pay, and a formula string. Example: hourly_wage twenty and hours_worked fifty produces ten overtime hours and overtime_pay of three hundred, because ten times twenty times one and one-half is three hundred.

Where a Florida overtime calculator earns its keep

Payroll clerks and small Florida employers use a Florida overtime calculator when a timesheet shows a fifty-hour hospitality week or a construction crew that stayed through Saturday and they need the overtime dollar line before a paycheck is cut, without opening a full HR suite. Employees check a known hourly wage against a weekly total so a ten-hour day is not mistaken for California daily overtime that Florida does not require. Teachers and HR classrooms generate answer keys for FLSA weekly overtime instead of trusting opaque apps that apply a multiplier to hours the student already classified or that mix in a seventh-day rule from another state. Staffing tools put overtime_pay next to regular_pay so a coordinator sees statutory overtime earnings, not a wall of raw hours. On this page the work runs entirely in the browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. Pair the free interactive run with the priced, identical API when you move from a worksheet demo to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result or re-implementing the Florida weekly schedule yourself. Tourism, restaurants, warehouses, and seasonal agriculture in the state all live on weekly hour totals, which is exactly the input this endpoint expects.
