Effective corporate tax rate calculator

A tax expense of 21,000 on pretax income of 100,000 is an effective corporate tax rate of 21%, the share of book profit that actually went to income tax after credits and deferrals. Enter both figures from the income statement. Free in your browser.

The effective corporate tax rate, often called ETR, is the share of pretax book income a company actually records as income-tax expense for the period: total tax expense divided by pretax income, expressed as a percent. Analysts, CFOs, credit desks, and journalists use that single percentage to compare the tax burden across firms, years, and jurisdictions after credits, deferred items, and mix of income have already done their work. This effective corporate tax rate calculator takes two numbers in the same currency — total tax expense and pretax income — divides them, multiplies by one hundred, and returns the rate as a percentage with the formula shown beside the result.

How effective corporate tax rate turns tax expense and pretax income into a percent

The effective corporate tax rate of a reporting entity is the percentage of pretax book income that shows up as income-tax expense on the income statement for the same period. A twenty-one thousand tax expense on one hundred thousand of pretax income is twenty-one percent; a forty-seven thousand three hundred fifty expense on two hundred fifteen thousand of pretax income is about twenty-two point zero two percent. That figure is not the statutory headline rate of any one country.

Statutory rates, credits, loss carry-forwards, valuation allowances, permanent differences, deferred tax, and the geographic mix of earnings all sit inside the two numbers you supply; the calculator does not reconstruct a tax provision, apply a rate table, or convert currencies. You supply both numbers in one currency; the calculator divides them and rounds the percentage half-up to six decimal places so goldens compare byte-for-byte across runtimes.

A zero tax expense on positive pretax income is a legitimate outcome and returns a rate of zero rather than an error: the period recorded no income-tax expense. A negative tax expense — a tax benefit — is also legitimate and the rate comes back negative, which is the honest signal rather than a silent absolute value. Negative pretax income is allowed as well: a book loss with a tax expense or a tax benefit still defines a ratio, and the sign follows the quotient.

What is not legitimate is a pretax income of exactly zero, because dividing by a break-even pretax line does not produce a rate.

Where an effective corporate tax rate calculator earns its keep

Equity analysts screening annual filings use an effective corporate tax rate calculator to turn last year's tax expense and pretax income into one comparable percentage before they open a full tax footnote. Credit analysts and journalists drop tax expense from the income statement and pretax income from the earnings-before-tax line, and they compare the accounting effective rate with a cash-tax case rather than treating either ratio as a substitute.

This is a different search and a different job from a statutory-rate lookup, from a VAT calculator, from a sales-tax calculator, and from an earnings-before-tax calculator: those tools price a legal rate, a consumption tax, a retail levy, or a pretax profit line. An effective corporate tax rate prices one period of income-tax expense against pretax book income. Failed validation does not consume balance.

Annual-report and 10-K screening

Turn last year's income-tax expense and pretax book income into one accounting effective corporate tax rate before you open the tax footnote.

Provision and scenario checks

Pin an accounting effective rate next to a cash-tax case so earnings models and credit memos share one pretax-to-tax percentage.

How is the effective corporate tax rate calculated?

The result is a percentage: twenty-one percent comes back as 21, not 0.21. The rate is rounded half-up to six decimal places.

What happens if pretax income is zero?

The effective corporate tax rate is undefined when pretax income is zero, and those failures are not billed.

What should I enter as tax expense?

Period total income-tax expense in the same currency as pretax income: current plus deferred tax as they appear on the income statement. Do not send a statutory rate, a cash-tax figure, or VAT unless that is the pair you truly want to divide. The calculator does not rebuild the tax footnote.

Is this the same as the statutory corporate tax rate?

No. The statutory rate is the legal headline rate of a jurisdiction. The effective corporate tax rate is tax expense over pretax book income after credits, deferred items, and mix. Those are different searches and different jobs.

Can the effective tax rate be negative?

Yes. A tax benefit, entered as a negative tax expense, gives a negative rate, and so can a book loss. The sign is kept on purpose, because hiding it behind an absolute value would misread the period.

Pretax income of zero is rejected with invalid_input and is not billed, because dividing by a break-even pretax line cannot define a rate.

How effective corporate tax rate turns tax expense and pretax income into a percent

The identity this calculator uses is effective_tax_rate equals tax_expense divided by pretax_income, times one hundred. This endpoint does not compute cash taxes paid, does not split current from deferred tax, does not apply a statutory rate, and does not convert currencies. This is an accounting effective corporate tax rate, not a cash effective tax rate, not a marginal statutory rate, and not a taxable-income ratio.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

Pretax income may be negative: a book loss still defines a ratio. Example: twenty-one thousand of tax expense and one hundred thousand of pretax income yield an effective corporate tax rate of twenty-one. POST a JSON body with two required finite numbers. tax_expense is the period total income-tax expense in one currency unit, including current and deferred tax as they appear on the income statement; aliases total_tax_expense, income_tax_expense, and tax map to the same field so a worksheet can keep its column names. pretax_income is earnings before tax in that same currency — the EBT line, not EBIT and not net income; aliases pre_tax_income, ebt, earnings_before_tax, and pretax are accepted. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or a numeric string. Missing fields, empty strings, and non-finite values fail with invalid_input naming the field. Tax expense may be zero or negative: a credit or a benefit times a non-zero pretax line produces a zero or negative effective_tax_rate, which is the honest accounting result rather than a clamped percentage. On success the body echoes tax_expense and pretax_income, then reports effective_tax_rate as a percentage rounded half-up to six decimal places, plus a formula string restating the identity. Pair the JSON with your own rule for which tax-expense definition matches the pretax line you chose — current plus deferred from the income statement, or cash taxes from the cash-flow statement — because this endpoint divides the two numbers you send; it does not rebuild the tax footnote, choose a statutory rate, or convert currencies.

Where an effective corporate tax rate calculator earns its keep

Investor-relations and financial-planning teams re-run the same two fields when a year closes or a restatement moves the pretax line, then pin effective_tax_rate in a peer table so every conversation starts from one rate. Keep pretax_income strictly different from zero, pin the rounded percentage in tests, and you get a reproducible effective corporate tax rate for memos, learning-management plugins, and edge workers without standing up a provision engine of your own.

Peer tables for IR and credit

Re-price a peer set when a year closes or a restatement moves pretax income: same calculator, new tax_expense or pretax_income, one shared effective_tax_rate.

What does the effective corporate tax rate calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
