Drywall sheet calculator

40 m² of wall and 20 m² of ceiling in 2.4 × 1.2 m sheets, with 10% waste, need 23 sheets and 736 screws at 32 per sheet. Start from measured areas and get the board order and screw box together. Free in your browser.

This drywall sheet calculator estimates how many gypsum boards and screws you need once you know the wall area and ceiling area in square metres and the sheet length and width in metres. It sums wall and ceiling coverage, divides by the face area of one board, applies an optional waste percentage for cuts and openings, rounds up to a whole sheet count, then multiplies by screws per sheet so your hardware list matches the board order. A common check uses forty square metres of wall, twenty of ceiling, two-point-four by one-point-two metre sheets, ten percent waste, and thirty-two screws per sheet, which yields a clear integer board total instead of a rough pallet guess. The engine is pure deterministic arithmetic with no network calls, no sampling, and no date-dependent shortcuts.

What your sheet and screw count means

Drywall orders are area-over-sheet problems: every board covers a fixed rectangle of wall or ceiling, and fasteners scale with how many full boards you buy after waste. If you only guess from room volume or from wall area alone you either under-order boards or forget the screw box that keeps the hang day on schedule. There is no catalogue of brand SKUs and no stud layout baked into the core number: you get a geometric take-off so you can raise waste for curved walls, many openings, or awkward returns.

Where drywall take-offs fit in DIY, trade quotes, and software

Homeowners meet this calculation when a basement finish, garage conversion, or bedroom remodel needs a second trip after a surprise waste of cut boards, or when a materials list must not overshoot the budget before the hang day. Drywall hangers and small contractors use the same numbers to turn measured elevations and ceiling plans into a shopping list before they leave the merchant yard, raising waste for closets, bulkheads, and many openings that generate offcuts.

Estimators embed the contract in take-off tools so a room schedule of wall area, ceiling area, board size, waste, and fastener rate becomes integer sheet and screw totals without a spreadsheet full of hidden cells. Product and education tools show learners why a ten percent waste margin on a modular board face changes the order far more than eyeballing bare room dimensions.

Pair it with paint, brick, or tile helpers when you are building a small lab of free, deterministic home-improvement calculators, and keep site judgement for framing, fire-rated assemblies, and moisture boards that your specification requires beyond the pure area-over-sheet count.

What does the drywall sheet calculator cost?

It is free in your browser on this page.

How are sheets and screws calculated?

Defaults are 10% waste and 32 screws per sheet.

What happens if wall and ceiling areas sum to zero or less?

Wall and ceiling may each be zero when the other is positive, but total area must be strictly positive. Negative areas are also rejected. Sheet length, sheet width, and screws per sheet must be positive.

Can I use feet instead of metres?

Yes if every linear and area input uses the same consistent system (for example sheet edges in feet and areas in square feet). The formulas are unit-agnostic as long as area matches length×width.

Does this layout studs, seams, or fire-rated assemblies?

No. It returns geometric sheet and screw totals only. Subtract large openings from your areas before calling if you want a tighter take-off, and follow local code for screw patterns and board type.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

What the drywall estimate means and what the response contains

This calculator returns the parsed wall area and ceiling area in square metres, their sum as total area, the sheet length and width in metres, the sheet face area, the waste percent applied, the screws-per-sheet rate, the exact fractional sheet count before waste, the count after waste as a float, the final integer sheets_required after ceiling, the integer screws_required, a unit tag, the precision used, a method tag, and a short formula string you can audit. Rejected cases include missing wall or ceiling area, missing sheet length or width, non-finite values, magnitudes above the documented ceiling, negative areas, a non-positive total of wall plus ceiling, zero or negative sheet dimensions, non-positive screws per sheet, and negative waste.

How wall area, ceiling area, sheet size, waste, and screws are read

Computation multiplies length by width for sheet area, divides total area by that face, multiplies by one plus waste over one hundred, ceilings with a tiny epsilon so values that sit just under an integer from floating-point noise still round up cleanly, then multiplies the integer sheet count by the screw rate. Prefer wall_area for vertical surfaces in square metres, with aliases walls, wall, wall_m2, and wall_sqm so forms and query strings can reuse the same contract. Ceiling area accepts ceiling_area plus ceiling, ceilings, ceiling_m2, and ceiling_sqm; either surface may be zero when the other is positive, but their sum must stay strictly positive because a non-positive total area cannot define a board order. Sheet length accepts sheet_length plus length, L, board_length, and panel_length; sheet width accepts sheet_width plus width, W, board_width, and panel_width, both required and strictly positive so the face module is well defined. Optional screws_per_sheet defaults to thirty-two and may be set via screws, fasteners_per_sheet, or screws_per_board when ceilings or local code need a denser pattern. Optional waste_percent defaults to ten percent and may be set via waste, waste_margin, margin, or waste_pct; zero waste is allowed for a pure geometric fill, but negative waste is rejected. Optional precision, with aliases decimals and dp, chooses decimal places for non-integer numeric fields, defaulting to four and capped at fifteen so JSON goldens stay stable while sheets_required and screws_required remain integers. Pair the free browser run on this page with the priced API when you need the identical mathematical result inside an automated pipeline without re-implementing the sheet formula yourself.

Where drywall take-offs fit in DIY, trade quotes, and software

On this page the work runs entirely in your browser; through the API each successful lookup costs $0.002, failed validation is not charged, and nothing is stored after the response returns. That split — free interactive exploration and a priced, identical API — matches the rest of the KIT tier-A catalog and lets you move from a phone check on site to an automated pipeline without changing the mathematical result.
