Debate speaking time split

Turn a debate format into minutes for every speech: a standard policy round runs 64 minutes, 32 for constructives, 20 for rebuttals and 12 for cross-examination, and a shorter class period shrinks every speech alike. Free in your browser.

Speech and cross-examination clocks make or break a fair debate round. Coaches, tournament directors, and classroom teachers need a single place to turn a chosen format into concrete minutes for every constructive speech, rebuttal, and cross-examination block—especially when a class period is shorter than a full tournament schedule and every speech must shrink by the same proportion. This debate speaking time split calculator accepts a format (policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, British Parliamentary, or custom role weights), optionally a total round budget in minutes, and returns an ordered period schedule plus role totals. Custom mode allocates the budget by constructive, rebuttal, and CX weights when your league uses a house rule.

What the speaking-time split is and how formats differ

A debate round is a fixed sequence of timed periods. Constructive speeches introduce cases and frameworks; rebuttals clash on clash points and crystallization; cross-examination (CX) periods let the opposing side ask questions under the clock. High-school policy debate traditionally uses eight-minute constructives, three-minute CX blocks after each constructive, and five-minute rebuttals—sixty-four minutes of speaking time before prep and roadmaps.

Lincoln-Douglas uses a shorter seven-speech pattern with six- and seven-minute constructives, three-minute CX, and staggered rebuttals totaling thirty-two minutes. Public Forum mixes four-minute constructives, two crossfires, summaries, a grand crossfire, and final focus speeches for thirty-five minutes. British Parliamentary awards seven minutes to each of eight speakers with no formal CX block; opening benches read as constructive, closing benches as rebuttal-heavy.

This capability encodes those standard lengths as default period tables.

When a fair debate clock matters most

Classroom debate units often have fifty minutes for everything including setup, so teachers need a scaled policy or LD skeleton instead of the full tournament length. Tournament hosts publishing pairings and room cards can generate the official speech list for each event code from one deterministic call. Online debate platforms and LMS plugins embed the free browser path so students see the same CX length their coach announced.

Failed validation does not consume balance. Keep format strings in your allowed enum, pin expected minutes in goldens, and you get reproducible round cards for homework, club nights, and edge workers without inventing speech lengths by hand each semester.

Classroom rounds that must fit a period

Scale a full policy or LD schedule down to the minutes left in class so every constructive, rebuttal, and CX still appears with proportional length.

Tournament room cards and ballots

Generate the ordered speaking list and role totals for policy, PF, LD, or BP from a single format code for pairings and judge packets.

How do I split debate speaking time by format?

Send format as policy, ld, pf, or bp.

What does custom format require?

Minutes for each role equal total times that weight over the weight sum.

How long is a standard policy debate round?

64 minutes of speaking time: four 8-minute constructives, a 3-minute cross-examination after each one, and four 5-minute rebuttals. Preparation time and roadmaps are not included.

How do I fit a full round into one class period?

Enter the minutes you have, for example 40 for a policy round. Every period is scaled by the same proportion, so each constructive, rebuttal and cross-examination still appears and keeps its relative length.

Does British Parliamentary include cross-examination?

No. It gives seven minutes to each of eight speakers with no formal cross-examination. Opening benches count as constructive time and closing benches as rebuttal time in the role totals.

Named formats ship with standard speech lengths; providing total_minutes scales every period so the sum matches your clock. The same pure logic powers the free browser tool and the API path, so printed ballots and automation scripts never disagree on how many minutes the 2AR or Grand Crossfire should get.

What the speaking-time split is and how formats differ

When you leave total_minutes empty, the response echoes the standard schedule. When you supply a different total—for example forty classroom minutes for a policy skeleton—every period scales by total_minutes divided by the format default sum, so relative speech ratios stay intact while the round fits the period. Role aggregates (constructive, rebuttal, cross_examination) sum the scaled minutes so coaches can see at a glance how much of the hour is CX versus pure speech.

Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour

POST a JSON body with a required format string: policy, ld, pf, bp, or custom (case-insensitive). For named formats, total_minutes is optional; omit it to use the format default total, or send a finite positive number to scale. For custom, total_minutes is required and must be strictly positive. Custom also accepts constructive_weight, rebuttal_weight, and cx_weight as finite non-negative numbers; at least one weight must be positive or the request fails with invalid_input because division by a zero weight sum is undefined. Missing format, unknown format values, non-finite numbers, and non-positive total_minutes also fail with invalid_input and are not billed. On success the body includes format, total_minutes, format_default_total (the sum of standard defaults or of custom weights), scaled (whether the total differs from that default sum), period_count, and periods: an ordered array of objects with index, name, side, role, default_minutes, minutes, and percent of the round. The by_role object reports minutes, count, and percent for constructive, rebuttal, and cross_examination. method and formula strings document the algorithm for clients that display provenance. Residual rounding after proportional allocation is absorbed by the last positive-default period so sum of period minutes equals total_minutes exactly within stable twelve-significant-digit cleaning. Pair the periods array with a timer UI or print a one-page order of speaking; this endpoint does not run a live clock or store tournament state.

Where a debate time-split API earns its keep

Prep-time calculators and flow sheets can consume by_role.minutes to allocate practice blocks—for example equal constructive drills when constructive dominates the schedule.

Custom house-rule leagues

Allocate a fixed total with constructive_weight, rebuttal_weight, and cx_weight when your league does not use a standard NSDA-style schedule.

Does British Parliamentary include cross-examination?

Standard BP has no formal CX block. Opening speeches are labeled constructive and closing speeches rebuttal; by_role.cross_examination minutes are zero for bp.

What happens if total_minutes is zero or negative?

The task fails with invalid_input. Round time must be a finite number strictly greater than zero. Invalid input is not billed.

What does the debate speaking time split calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
