CSV field escape (RFC 4180)
A value like Smith, John becomes "Smith, John" so its comma doesn't split the column, and every inner double quote is written twice, as RFC 4180 requires. Plain text such as plain comes back untouched. Free in your browser.

Escape a CSV field per RFC 4180 (double quotes doubled). Search intent: csv escape online / rfc4180. No network calls, no random seeds, and no server state are required for a correct answer.
Why some CSV values need quotes
A CSV file separates values with commas and rows with line breaks. That works until a value itself contains one of those characters: a name like Smith, John would be split into two columns, and an address with a line break would end the row early. RFC 4180, the common description of the CSV format, solves this by wrapping such a value in double quotes. This tool applies that rule to one value at a time and adds quotes only when the value contains a comma, a double quote or a line break, so a plain word stays as it is.
Doubled quotes and the always-quote option
If the value already contains a double quote, wrapping it is not enough, because a reader would take that quote as the end of the value. The rule is to write each inner double quote twice, and the tool does that before adding the outer quotes. Any spreadsheet or program that follows RFC 4180 then reads back the original text exactly. When you want every value wrapped, for a uniform file or a program that expects it, turn on the option to always quote. The result also tells you whether quotes were added.
How it works
Escape a CSV field per RFC 4180 (double quotes doubled). Quotes when the field contains comma, quote, or newlines, or when forced. The implementation is pure JavaScript with no external services.

When to use it
Use this when your search intent matches the calculator name and you need a reproducible answer for teaching, finance ops, GIS, text tooling, or unit history work. FAQ
Does it call the network?
No. All math and text transforms are local and deterministic.
When does a CSV value need quotes?
When it contains a comma, a double quote or a line break. Those characters would otherwise split the value or end the row early, so the tool wraps the whole value in double quotes. A plain value such as plain is returned unchanged.
How are double quotes inside a value handled?
Each double quote inside the value is written twice, and the whole value is wrapped in quotes. That is the rule from RFC 4180, so any spreadsheet or program that follows it reads the original text back exactly.
Can I force quotes on every value?
Yes. Turn on the always quote option and the value is wrapped in double quotes even when it contains no comma, quote or line break. That helps when a file must look uniform or a program expects every value quoted.
Does a semicolon or a tab trigger quotes?
No. Only a comma, a double quote or a line break makes the tool add quotes. If your spreadsheet uses semicolons to separate columns, turn on the always quote option so each value is wrapped anyway.
