Corrected calcium calculator
With calcium at 8 mg/dL and albumin at 3 g/dL, the Payne formula adds 0.8 and gives a corrected calcium of 8.8. Each gram of albumin below 4 adds 0.8 mg/dL, so low protein does not pass for true low calcium. Free in your browser.

Albumin-corrected calcium adjusts total serum calcium for abnormal albumin so low protein does not masquerade as true hypocalcemia and high albumin does not inflate the number. Most teaching labs and many clinical calculators still use the classical Payne formula: corrected calcium equals measured calcium plus zero point eight times four minus albumin, with calcium in milligrams per decilitre and albumin in grams per decilitre. When albumin is exactly four grams per decilitre the correction is zero and the corrected value equals the measured total. When albumin falls, the formula raises the reported calcium; when albumin is high, it lowers it. This calculator accepts a finite measured calcium and a strictly positive albumin, returns the cleaned inputs, the albumin deficit relative to four, the additive correction term, and the corrected calcium, and rejects non-positive albumin so invalid protein values never produce a fake adjustment.
How albumin-corrected calcium is computed from measured calcium and albumin
Total serum calcium includes calcium bound to proteins, chiefly albumin, plus free ionized calcium and a smaller complexed fraction. When albumin is low, less calcium is bound, so the total concentration falls even if ionized calcium is adequate. The classical educational correction adds a fixed amount for each gram per decilitre that albumin sits below a conventional normal of four grams per decilitre.
In symbols, corrected calcium equals measured calcium plus zero point eight times open parenthesis four minus albumin close parenthesis. Algebraically that is the same as measured calcium plus zero point eight times the albumin deficit, where the deficit is four minus albumin and may be negative when albumin exceeds four. This capability implements that closed form exactly: it does not measure ionized calcium, does not apply pH or anion-gap corrections, and does not convert SI millimoles per litre or grams per litre unless you already converted the inputs.
Measured calcium must be a finite number in milligrams per decilitre. Albumin must be finite and strictly greater than zero; zero or negative albumin cannot represent a meaningful serum protein for this model and fails with invalid input rather than inventing an absolute-value workaround. Always frame outputs as educational estimates from the published Payne formula, not as a clinical diagnosis or a substitute for professional judgment, ionized calcium assays, or local laboratory reference ranges.
Where corrected calcium calculators show up in real work
Secondary-school and college physiology and nursing courses constantly assign albumin correction drills from textbook lab panels, so a single trusted oracle that returns the deficit, the additive term, and the corrected value speeds grading and demo setup. Clinical training programs use the Payne rule as a bedside estimate before ionized calcium is available, and instructors need deterministic answer keys that match hand arithmetic on milligrams per decilitre and grams per decilitre.
Product teams building educational lab or simulation widgets want a documented calcium-albumin path that clients can audit by hand rather than a black-box score that mixes multiple formulas without disclosure. Research assistants preparing synthetic chemistry datasets need stable corrected-calcium labels from known pairs without network calls or model drift. If you later need mean arterial pressure, body surface area, unit conversion among milligrams and millimoles, or ionized calcium interpretation, treat those as separate search intents and landings rather than overloading this corrected calcium calculator page.
Always present results as educational estimates from the classical albumin correction; clinical decisions require qualified professionals, local reference ranges, and assays this tool does not collect.
What you can do with it
Classroom lab answer keys
Generate albumin deficit, correction term, and corrected calcium from textbook Ca/albumin pairs so instructors and auto-graders share one transparent ground truth.
Nursing and physiology demos
Show the classical Payne albumin adjustment in training labs without mixing ionized-calcium or SI dual-unit models on the same landing.
FAQ
What is albumin-corrected calcium?
It is total serum calcium adjusted for abnormal albumin so protein changes do not fully masquerade as true calcium disorders. This calculator uses the Payne formula: corrected Ca = measured Ca + 0.8×(4 − albumin).
What happens if albumin is zero or negative?
Non-positive albumin is rejected rather than inventing absolute values or silent NaNs.
How do I format the input?
Send calcium and albumin as finite numbers (e.g. 8.0 and 3.0). Albumin must be strictly positive.
What does it cost?
The browser tool is free and runs locally.
Can the correction lower my calcium value?
Yes. When albumin is above 4 g/dL the deficit turns negative and the corrected value falls below the measured one. At exactly 4 g/dL there is no correction, so a calcium of 9.5 stays 9.5.

Technical notes
How albumin-corrected calcium is computed from measured calcium and albumin
The computation is pure floating-point arithmetic with no network calls, no random seeds, no wall-clock timestamps, and no machine-learning drift, so identical calcium and albumin pairs always yield identical JSON.
What you send and what you get back
Send two required fields. Classic smoke checks include eight milligrams per decilitre with albumin three, which yields a corrected calcium of eight point eight and a correction of zero point eight, and nine point five with albumin four, which leaves the corrected value equal to the measured total. If your upstream form collects SI units, convert calcium to milligrams per decilitre and albumin to grams per decilitre first, then pass the positive albumin and finite calcium here so the Payne path stays comparable to textbook tables. The field calcium is the measured total serum calcium in milligrams per decilitre and must be a finite number; aliases ca, serum_calcium, total_calcium, and measured_calcium are accepted. The field albumin is the serum albumin in grams per decilitre and must be finite and strictly positive; aliases alb and serum_albumin are accepted. Missing fields, non-numeric strings, NaN, Infinity, and zero or negative albumin fail with invalid_input and are not charged. On success the response returns the cleaned calcium and albumin values, albumin_deficit as four minus albumin, correction as zero point eight times that deficit, corrected_calcium as calcium plus the correction, unit_calcium set to mg/dL, unit_albumin set to g/dL, normal_albumin equal to four, factor equal to zero point eight, the formula string corrected_Ca equals Ca plus zero point eight times open parenthesis four minus albumin close parenthesis, and method payne_albumin_correction. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.

Technical questions
What formula and units do you use?
corrected_calcium = calcium + 0.8 × (4.0 − albumin), with calcium in mg/dL and albumin in g/dL. The result is reported in mg/dL.
