Cone lateral surface area
Get the area of a cone's sloping side from its base radius and slant height with π r l: a radius of 3 and a slant height of 5 give exactly 15π. The base is not included. Free in your browser.

The lateral surface of a right circular cone is the curved side that remains when you unroll the cone into a sector of a circle. Students, teachers, and engineers need that area from the two measurements they already have: the base radius and the slant height along the generatrix. This cone lateral surface area calculator multiplies those values by π with a single closed form A equals π r l, returns a rounded numeric result, and rejects negative dimensions so a sign error never becomes a silent negative area. You do not need the perpendicular height when slant height is already known; you do not need volume or base area unless your workflow asks for them separately.
What lateral surface area means for a right circular cone
A right circular cone has a circular base and an apex that sits directly above the center of that base. The perpendicular height h runs from apex to center; the slant height l runs from apex to a point on the base circumference and satisfies l equals the square root of r squared plus h squared when both r and h are known. The lateral surface is the curved wall only—not the circular base disk.
When you cut the cone along a generatrix and flatten the wall, you obtain a circular sector whose radius is the slant height l and whose arc length is the base circumference 2πr. The area of that sector is exactly one half times arc length times sector radius, which simplifies to π r l.
If you only know r and h, first recover l as the hypotenuse of the right triangle with legs r and h, then call this calculator; if you already measured the generatrix with a tape or a drawing, feed r and l directly and skip the square root. Negative radius or slant height has no geometric meaning for a solid cone and is rejected as invalid input so clients never treat a sign flip as a valid area.
What you can do with it
Classroom and homework checks
Let students submit base radius and slant height and verify that lateral area equals π r l before they mix it up with total surface or volume.
Exam and LMS auto-grading
Mark cone lateral-area items with a deterministic oracle that rejects negative dimensions and returns a stable rounded π r l.
Material and pattern estimates
Estimate unrolled cone sector area from measured generatrix and base radius in packaging or sheet-metal scripts without a full CAD stack.
FAQ
What is the difference between slant height and perpendicular height?
Perpendicular height h is the axis from apex to base center. Slant height l is the generatrix from apex to the base rim; l = √(r² + h²). This calculator uses l directly.
What happens if radius or slant height is negative?
Negative or zero dimensions are not allowed for a solid cone; invalid requests are not billed.
Does this include the base of the cone?
No. Lateral surface is the curved side only (π r l).
Where does the formula π r l come from?
Cut the side along a straight line and lay it flat: you get a sector of a circle whose radius is the slant height and whose arc is the base circumference, 2πr. Half the arc times the radius gives π r l.
What if I only know the radius and the height?
Work out the slant height first: it is the square root of the radius squared plus the height squared. Then enter the radius and that slant height to get the area of the side.

Technical notes
What lateral surface area means for a right circular cone
That identity is why textbooks write lateral surface area as π r l and why this endpoint asks for radius and slant height rather than radius and perpendicular height alone.
Input contract, formula, and response shape
Example: radius three and slant height five yields lateral surface area fifteen π, which at default precision is about forty-seven point one two three eight eight nine eight zero three eight. POST a JSON body with two required positive finite numbers: radius (aliases r, R, base_radius) for the base circle, and slant_height (aliases l, L, slant, generatrix) for the generatrix length from apex to base rim. Optionally send precision as an integer from zero to fifteen (aliases decimals, dp); the default is ten decimal places on every numeric field in the response. Missing fields, empty strings, non-finite values, zero, and negative values fail with invalid_input naming the field; those failures are not billed. On success the body echoes radius and slant_height at the chosen precision, returns lateral_surface_area equal to π times radius times slant height rounded the same way, and includes a short formula string A_lateral equals π r l for display next to the answer. Pair the result with your own unit labels (square centimetres, square inches) because the API is unit-agnostic: it multiplies the numbers you send and assumes r and l share the same length unit. This endpoint does not compute volume, base area, or total surface; use a full cone metrics tool when you need the whole suite from radius and perpendicular height.
Where a cone lateral area API earns its keep
Classrooms and tutoring platforms use a dedicated cone lateral surface area calculator so learners can check π r l without confusing it with total surface π r (r plus l) or with cylinder lateral area 2π r h. Exam generators need a deterministic oracle that rejects negative dimensions and never invents a base area when the prompt only asked for the curved side. Failed validation does not consume balance. Packaging, sheet-metal, and craft workflows often know the generatrix length from a pattern or a cut line and only need the unrolled sector area for material estimates; calling a tiny parse API avoids pulling a full solid-geometry package for one product. Keep requests small, pin the rounded lateral_surface_area in tests, and you get reproducible areas for homework, LMS plugins, CAD helpers, and edge workers without standing up symbolic math infrastructure of your own.
Technical questions
How do I calculate the lateral surface area of a cone?
Send positive finite radius and slant_height. The API returns lateral_surface_area = π × r × l, rounded to the requested precision (default 10 decimal places).
What does the cone lateral surface area calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
