CMU grout fill calculator

40 filled cells with 0.03 m² cores in a 2.4 m wall take 2.88 m³ of grout, or 3.024 m³ with the default 5% waste. Count the cells, enter the core area and pour height, and order the right volume. Free in your browser.

Solid-grouting concrete masonry unit cores is a standard way to add strength, anchorage and fire resistance to CMU walls. Ordering too little grout stalls the pour; ordering far too much wastes mix and pump time. This CMU grout fill calculator turns a cell count, wall height and one-cell cross-sectional area into a deterministic net volume and an optional waste-adjusted total you can send to the ready-mix plant or batch on site. Count every vertical cell you plan to fill, measure or look up the horizontal area of a single core, and enter the continuous height of the grout column. The engine multiplies those three values, then applies a waste percent (default five) for pump lines, over-pour and clean-out. Units stay in your system: square metres times metres yield cubic metres; square feet times feet yield cubic feet.

Count filled cells and match wall height to one unit system

Start by deciding which cores will actually receive grout. Partial-height or partial-plan grouting is common: bond beams, cells under bearing plates, jambs around openings, and fully solid-grouted structural walls all use different cell counts. Walk the elevation or the structural note and count vertical cell columns that will be continuous for the pour height you are estimating.

A typical two-core eight-by-eight-by-sixteen block contributes two cells per course when both cores are filled; multi-wythe or special units may differ, so count cells, not only block faces. Mixing inches for core size with feet for wall height undercounts or overcounts volume by large factors.

Structural solid-grout takeoffs

Estimators enter cell counts from structural elevations, wall height and catalog core area to size ready-mix grout before the pump day.

Partial-height bond beams and jambs

Detailers count only the cells under plates, around openings or in bond-beam courses and get a focused volume instead of a full-wall overorder.

Is the CMU grout fill calculator free?

The browser tool runs free on your device.

What waste percent should I choose?

Five percent is the default for typical pump pours. Increase for long hose runs, many clean-outs or complex sequencing; lower only when volume is tightly controlled and spare mix is already on site.

How do I find the area of one block core?

Take the width times the depth of the open cell from the manufacturer's catalog, or measure a sample block. Open cores on 200 mm (8 in) units are often near 0.02 to 0.04 m², but web thickness varies, so confirm it.

Do I have to fill every cell in the wall?

No. Count only the cells that will receive grout, such as bond beams, cells under bearing plates and jambs around openings. A fully solid-grouted structural wall uses every cell, and a two-core 8×8×16 block gives two cells per course.

What wall height should I enter?

The continuous height of the grout column in those cells. That is often the storey height minus any ungrouted top course, or the height from the footing to the bond beam when that is the pour.

Count filled cells and match wall height to one unit system

Express filled_cells as that total column count for the pour. Next set wall_height to the continuous vertical distance the grout will occupy in those cells—often storey height less any ungrouted course at the top, or the height from the footing to the bond beam if that is the pour. Keep wall_height in linear units that match the square-root of cell_area: if cell_area is in square metres, wall_height must be in metres; if cell_area is in square feet, wall_height must be in feet. Aliases cells, cores, cell_count and n_cells map to filled_cells; height, h, wall_h and column_height map to wall_height. filled_cells may be zero (yielding zero volume) but must not be negative; wall_height must be strictly positive and finite. Missing or non-numeric values raise invalid_input and are not billed.

Cell area, waste allowance, and how volume is computed

Use manufacturer catalog core dimensions (width times depth of the open cell after webs) or measure a sample unit. Typical open cores on two-hundred-millimetre (eight-inch) CMU often fall near a few hundredths of a square metre, but web thickness and core style vary widely—always confirm rather than memorizing a rule of thumb. Five percent suits clean pump pours with modest overfill; raise it for long hose runs, multiple clean-outs, cold-weather restarts or first-time crews. cell_area is the horizontal cross-section of one open core, not the face area of the block. Aliases core_area, area, cell_cross_section and a_cell are accepted. The optional waste_percent field defaults to five when omitted and accepts zero through one hundred; aliases waste, waste_allowance and overage map to the same number. The engine forms net_volume as filled_cells times cell_area times wall_height, builds waste_factor as one plus waste_percent divided by one hundred, then returns volume_with_waste as net_volume times waste_factor. The method label is always cells_times_area_times_height for stable downstream branching. Negative waste, waste above one hundred, zero or negative cell_area, and non-positive wall_height fail with invalid_input. Identical inputs always produce identical JSON because the path is pure arithmetic with no network, random seed or wall clock. Order ready-mix or bagged grout from volume_with_waste, and keep a small site spare if the pour sequence includes many stops.

API usage, pricing, construction workflows, and practical limits

Call the free in-browser CMU grout fill calculator for site estimates, supplier counters and contractor whiteboards without installing a spreadsheet. Convert imperial and metric packaging client-side if the plant quotes cubic yards and your takeoff is in cubic feet: one cubic yard is twenty-seven cubic feet. Send a JSON body with filled_cells, wall_height and cell_area, plus optional waste_percent when five percent is not right for the pour. Use the prepaid API when a construction app, materials configurator, quantity-takeoff pipeline or property-management tool needs a stable contract under KIT balance at $0.002 per successful item; validation failures never consume balance after the engine rejects the request. Pair this endpoint with a concrete block count helper when you first size the wall face, then count only the cells that structural notes require to be solid-grouted—block count and filled-cell count are not the same when only selected cores are filled. Authors shipping SDKs can map volume_with_waste into purchase lines while showing net_volume and waste_factor as explanatory detail for the estimator or inspector.

Supply and app configurators

Building-materials sites and field apps quote grout volume as shoppers change cell count, height or waste, using the same deterministic API contract.

How does the CMU grout fill calculator compute volume?

It multiplies filled_cells by cell_area by wall_height for net_volume, then multiplies by (1 + waste_percent/100) for volume_with_waste. Units stay consistent (m²×m→m³ or ft²×ft→ft³).

What is cell_area — face size or core opening?

cell_area is the horizontal cross-section of one open core (core width × depth), not the block face. Use manufacturer data or measure the open cell.

Can filled_cells be zero?

Yes. Zero cells yield zero net and waste-adjusted volume. Negative cell counts are rejected with invalid_input.
