The Chinese zodiac is not only a twelve-animal list. Every year also carries a Wu Xing five-element identity—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water—woven through the traditional sixty-year sexagenary cycle of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. That pairing is what people mean when they say Wood Dragon, Fire Horse, or Metal Rat: the animal from the twelve-branch sequence combined with the element and yin or yang polarity from the ten-stem sequence. This calculator takes a single Gregorian calendar year as an integer and returns the animal, element, polarity, stem and branch pinyin labels, sexagenary compound name, and position from one through sixty in the cycle. The mapping is the standard proleptic formula anchored so that nineteen eighty-four is Jia-Zi, the Yang Wood Rat that opens a modern sixty-year period. Non-integer years are rejected with a clear validation error instead of silent rounding.

How the 60-year animal and element cycle works

Chinese year labels in the traditional calendar combine two independent cycles. The Earthly Branches run through twelve animals in a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The Heavenly Stems run through ten positions that encode both the Wu Xing element and a yin or yang polarity: Jia and Yi are Wood, Bing and Ding are Fire, Wu and Ji are Earth, Geng and Xin are Metal, Ren and Gui are Water; even stem indices are yang and odd stem indices are yin. The least common multiple of twelve and ten is sixty, so every unique stem-branch pair repeats only after sixty years—the sexagenary cycle still used for historical dating, horoscope writing, and cultural year names.

The computational mapping used here is branch index equals year minus four, modulo twelve, and stem index equals year minus four, modulo ten, with cycle position equal to year minus four modulo sixty plus one. Under that convention, nineteen eighty-four is cycle position one: Jia-Zi, Yang Wood Rat. Two thousand twenty-four is Jia-Chen, Yang Wood Dragon; two thousand twenty is Geng-Zi, Yang Metal Rat.

Negative years remain well-defined because the implementation uses a positive modulo so the proleptic cycle continues backward for historical research without throwing. What this year-only tool deliberately does not do is shift the boundary at Chinese New Year; if you need the exact lunar new-year cutover for a January or early February birth date, you still need a lunisolar calendar converter, which is a different search intent and a different landing.

Where Chinese zodiac element lookups show up in real work

Editorial and marketing teams plan lunar new year campaigns months ahead and need reliable animal-plus-element copy for every market year without hand-maintaining a spreadsheet that drifts after each decade. Educators teaching East Asian history or cultural studies assign sexagenary dating exercises and want a single oracle that returns both the popular animal name and the formal stem-branch compound so students can cross-check textbooks. Genealogy and family-history tools store birth years from mixed Western and Chinese sources and benefit from a deterministic year-to-label map when building timelines or validating transcribed documents.

Game designers, novelists, and app developers building character backgrounds or yearly event themes often need the five-element flavor of a year—Fire Horse versus Water Horse—not only the animal glyph. If you later need full Ba Zi four-pillar charts from a precise birth datetime, Western sun-sign astrology, or day-of-year ordinals inside a Gregorian year, treat those as separate search intents and landings rather than overloading this year-based Chinese zodiac element calculator.

Lunar new year campaign copy

Generate the correct animal and five-element year name for product pages, emails, and social posts before each Chinese New Year campaign.

Classroom sexagenary drills

Give students the animal, stem-branch pinyin, and cycle position for any year so homework keys match a single deterministic oracle.

Genealogy and timeline labels

Annotate birth and event years with traditional Chinese year names (element + animal) when building family histories or historical timelines.

How is the Chinese zodiac animal calculated from a year?

The Earthly Branch index is (year − 4) modulo 12, mapping 0–11 to Rat through Pig. For example, 2024 yields branch index 4, which is Dragon.

How is the five-element pairing determined?

The Heavenly Stem index is (year − 4) modulo 10. Stems map in pairs to Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water; even indices are yang and odd indices are yin.

What is the 60-year sexagenary cycle?

It is the least common multiple of the 12 animals and 10 stems. Each unique stem-branch pair (for example Jia-Chen) repeats every 60 years. Position 1 in this tool is 1984, Jia-Zi Wood Rat.

Does this account for Chinese New Year?

No. The input is a nominal Gregorian calendar year only. People born in January or early February may belong to the previous Chinese lunar year; use a lunisolar converter for that boundary.

What does it cost?

The browser tool is free and runs locally.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

How the 60-year animal and element cycle works

The algorithm is pure modular arithmetic on an integer year: no wall-clock clock, no random seed, no network call, and no floating-point drift.

What you send and what you get back

Send one required field named year as an integer Gregorian calendar year such as two thousand twenty-four. Classic sanity checks include nineteen eighty-four as Yang Wood Rat at cycle position one, two thousand as Yang Metal Dragon, two thousand twelve as Yang Water Dragon, and two thousand twenty-five as Yin Wood Ox. Integer digit strings are accepted when they parse cleanly as whole numbers; fractional numbers, empty strings, boolean values, and non-numeric text fail with invalid_input and are not charged. On success the response echoes the year and returns animal as one of the twelve English animal names, element as one of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water, and polarity as yin or yang. It also returns zero-based stem_index and branch_index for programmatic use, stem_pinyin and branch_pinyin for traditional labels such as Jia and Chen, sexagenary as the hyphenated stem-branch name, cycle_position from one to sixty, cycle_length always sixty, a human-readable label such as Yang Wood Dragon, and a short formula string that documents the modular rules so reviewers can audit the mapping without reading source. Pricing for successful API calls is the published base of $0.002 per item; validation failures do not consume prepaid balance.
