Check interview answer STAR structure

An answer that sets the scene, states your own task, lists the steps you took and ends with a measured outcome scores 100, with all four STAR parts present. Paste your practice answer and see which parts look missing before the interview. Free in your browser.

Many candidates ramble through context, skip the personal task, or end without a measurable outcome—and never notice the gap until feedback arrives too late. Empty text is rejected so blank submissions never look like a clean bill of health.

What STAR means and what this checker actually measures

STAR is a widely taught interview framework: Situation sets the scene (team, product, constraint, or crisis), Task states your specific ownership or goal, Action describes the concrete steps you took—not only what the team did in general—and Result closes with the outcome, ideally with numbers or a clear before-and-after. Recruiters listen for those four beats because they map experience to competence under pressure. This capability does not grade eloquence, truthfulness, or cultural fit.

It runs a fixed, transparent set of English keyword phrases and optional section labels such as Situation colon or Result colon against your text, records which signals fired, and builds a coverage list of present and missing components. A complete label-heavy answer that mentions background, responsibility, steps you took, and a quantified outcome will usually mark all four components present with score one hundred. A short brag that only lists tools and a happy ending may light Action and Result while leaving Situation and Task missing.

That honesty is the product: you see the structural holes, not a vague “needs improvement” from a black-box model.

Where a STAR check helps most

Career platforms and bootcamps can drop this check into practice flows so learners iterate on behavioral stories without waiting for a human coach on every draft. Recruiters building internal rubrics can store the covered and missing arrays next to a free-text answer for later calibration, knowing the heuristic is deterministic across locales of the product UI even though the signal dictionary is English-oriented.

Keep answers reasonably short for UX, pin expected covered lists in tests, and you get reproducible STAR structure flags for homework, SaaS features, and edge workers without standing up an LLM pipeline for a checklist that keywords can already catch.

Interview prep and practice loops

Let candidates paste a behavioral answer and immediately see which STAR parts look missing before a coach or mock interview.

Coaching dashboards and rubrics

Store covered, missing, and per-component signals next to free-text answers for deterministic structure review at scale.

How does the STAR interview answer checker work?

It scans your answer for English keyword phrases and section headers associated with Situation, Task, Action, and Result, then returns which components appear present, which are missing, and a 0–100 coverage score.

What happens if the answer text is empty?

Empty or whitespace-only text is rejected so a blank submission is never treated as a successful check.

Does a high score mean my answer is good?

No. Score only reflects heuristic coverage of STAR signals. Clarity, honesty, seniority fit, and storytelling quality still need human or model judgment.

Do I need to label sections with Situation: and Result:?

Labels help and are detected as section headers, but unlabeled answers can still pass if keyword phrases for each component appear in the prose.

Why does my answer show Situation and Task as missing?

A short answer that only lists tools and a happy ending often lights up Action and Result but nothing else. Add the background, such as the team or the problem, and say what you were personally responsible for.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

curl -X POST https://api.kit.forhosting.com/life/interview-answer-star-check \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $KIT_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text":"Texto de ejemplo"}'

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

Published price — no tokens, no invented credits. A failed task is never charged.

HTTPCodeMeaning
401unauthorizedMissing or invalid API key.
402insufficient_balanceYour balance doesn't cover the task price.
404unknown_typeThat task type doesn't exist.
429rate_limitedToo many requests. Use the webhook instead of polling.

Behavioral interviews reward answers that walk a hiring manager through a clear story: what the Situation was, what Task you owned, what Action you took, and what Result you delivered. This STAR interview answer checker scans your draft with deterministic keyword and section-header heuristics for Situation, Task, Action, and Result, flags which parts appear missing, and returns a simple coverage score you can fix before the call. The same pure logic powers the free browser tool and the API path at $0.002 per successful call, with no model tokens and no outbound network.

Input contract, response fields, and empty-text errors

Pair the response with your own UI: highlight missing components in red, offer example prompts for the gaps, and re-check after the candidate revises. Do not treat score one hundred as proof of a hireable story—only as structural coverage under these keywords. Send a JSON body with one required field: text, a non-empty string containing the interview answer (aliases answer, input, content, body, story, and response are accepted by the same parser). Leading and trailing whitespace are trimmed for analysis; if the field is missing, not a string, empty, or only whitespace, the task fails with invalid_input and is not billed. On success the body echoes structural metrics: word_count and char_count of the trimmed answer; boolean flags has_situation, has_task, has_action, and has_result; arrays covered and missing with the component names that passed or failed the heuristic; coverage_count from zero to four; coverage_ratio as coverage_count divided by four; complete true only when all four are present; score as coverage_count times twenty-five for a simple zero-to-one-hundred scale; and per-component objects situation, task, action, and result each with present, from_header, signals, and signal_count so coaches can show which phrases triggered. The method field is always star_keyword_structure so clients can distinguish this contract from a future semantic scorer.

Where a STAR structure API earns its keep

Applicant tracking and interview-prep products can gate “submit answer” until coverage_count reaches a threshold, or soft-warn when Result is missing before a mock session.

Bootcamp and LMS auto-checks

Require a minimum coverage_count on practice stories so students learn to include Situation, Task, Action, and Result by habit.

What does the STAR structure check cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
