A car loan EMI is the equated monthly installment a lender expects when you finance a vehicle: one fixed amount every month that covers both interest and principal until the note is paid. Shoppers, dealers, and lenders quote three numbers—loan amount, annual interest rate, and tenure in months—and need the EMI plus the total interest those months will cost.
How the car loan EMI and total interest are computed
Car loan EMI is the equated monthly installment of a fully amortizing vehicle note: the same payment every month that first covers the interest accrued on the outstanding balance and then retires principal. Lenders quote a loan amount P (the cash actually financed after down payment, trade-in equity, and rebates, plus any taxes or add-ons rolled into the note), a nominal annual interest rate as a percent, and a tenure n in whole months.
The monthly periodic rate r is that annual rate divided by one hundred and then by twelve. When r is positive the closed-form reducing-balance formula applies: EMI equals P times r times (1+r) to the n, divided by (1+r) to the n minus one. When the annual rate is exactly zero—a common festival or dealer promotion—the EMI collapses to P divided by n because there is no interest component.
After the EMI is rounded to two decimal places, total paid is EMI times n and total interest is that product minus P. That closed form is what Indian, UK, and ASEAN car-loan EMI calculators advertise, and it is what this capability returns: the installment and the interest burden, not a month-by-month amortization table.
Typical consumer tenures are twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six, forty-eight, sixty, seventy-two, or eighty-four months; the contract accepts any positive integer tenure from one through three hundred sixty so short bridge notes and longer commercial lengths still compute without a second tool.
What you can do with it
Showroom and buyer EMI worksheets
Turn loan amount, quoted annual rate, and a 36–84 month tenure into EMI and total interest before the buyer signs the vehicle note.
FAQ
How is car loan EMI calculated?
For a 0% rate, EMI is amount/n. EMI is rounded to cents; total interest is EMI times n minus amount.
What happens if the loan amount is not positive?
Zero and negative loan amounts are rejected and are not billed.
Which amount should I enter for a car loan EMI?
The amount actually financed, not the sticker price. Subtract your cash down payment, positive trade-in equity and factory rebates, then add taxes, title, dealer fees or negative equity only if they are rolled into the loan.
What is the EMI on a 0% car loan offer?
It is simply the loan amount divided by the number of months, because there is no interest to pay. Festival and dealer promotions at zero percent are handled this way, and the total interest comes out as zero.
Does it show a month-by-month repayment schedule?
No. It gives the fixed installment, the total paid and the total interest for the whole tenure. That is enough to compare offers or tenures before you sign the vehicle note.

Technical notes
This car loan EMI calculator applies the standard reducing-balance annuity formula, so a 0 percent promotional rate collapses to amount divided by tenure, and any non-positive loan amount fails with invalid_input instead of inventing a payment.
How the car loan EMI and total interest are computed
The loan amount must be a finite number greater than zero; a zero or negative amount fails with invalid_input and is not billed.
Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour
A formula string restates the reducing-balance identity so a UI can show the math next to the answer. Example: five hundred thousand financed at 9.5 percent for sixty months yields a fixed EMI and a total-interest figure you can compare against a shorter or longer tenure before you sign. POST a JSON body with three required fields. amount is the loan amount actually financed, not the window sticker: subtract cash down, positive trade equity, and factory rebates that reduce the note, then add taxes, title, dealer fees, and negative equity only if they are rolled in. Aliases loan_amount and principal map to the same field so dealer forms can reuse their column names. annual_rate is the nominal annual interest rate as a percent (eight point five means 8.5 percent a year); aliases rate, interest_rate, and apr are accepted. tenure_months is the repayment period in whole months; aliases months, tenure, term_months, and term map to the same field. tenure_months must be a positive integer from 1 to 360—zero, negatives, and values such as 60.5 fail with invalid_input naming tenure_months. Each numeric field may arrive as a JSON number or a numeric string; missing fields, empty strings, and non-finite values fail with a message that names the field. If amount is not positive the task fails with invalid_input and is not billed—that is the contract buyers and APIs rely on when a worksheet sends a leftover zero. On success the body echoes amount, annual_rate, and tenure_months, reports monthly_rate and the rounded emi, then total_paid and total_interest. Pair the JSON with your own amortization chart if you need every row; this endpoint returns the equated installment and the interest total, so responses stay small for widgets and APIs.
Where a car loan EMI calculator earns its keep
Buyers use a car loan EMI calculator at the desk to convert a quoted rate and a 36-, 48-, 60-, or 72-month tenure into a monthly installment they can actually budget, then to see total interest before saying yes to an extra year that only drops the EMI a little. Dealers and NBFCs drop the same three fields into origination worksheets so a 0 percent promo can be compared with a cash rebate that lowers the loan amount instead. Failed validation does not consume balance. Refinance desks re-run amount as the current payoff, annual_rate as the new offer, and tenure_months as the remaining or reset term, then read total_interest against the old note. Keep amount positive, keep tenure_months a positive integer, pin the rounded currency fields in tests, and you get reproducible car-loan EMI figures for deal jackets, LMS plugins, and edge workers without standing up a servicing engine of your own.
Integration use cases
Zero-percent promo versus rebate
Compare a 0% EMI tenure against a cash rebate that lowers amount: same calculator, different annual_rate and amount, honest totals either way.
Refinance and payoff checks
Re-run the current payoff as amount with a new annual_rate and tenure_months to see whether resetting the car loan actually saves interest.
Technical questions
Does a 0% promotional rate work?
Yes. Set annual_rate to 0. EMI is the loan amount divided by tenure_months and total interest is zero aside from any leftover cents from rounding.
What does the response include besides EMI?
The body echoes amount, annual_rate, and tenure_months, then reports monthly_rate, emi, total_paid, total_interest, and a formula string. It does not return every intermediate amortization row.
What does the car loan EMI calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
