A trade weight that changed from port to port
The cantaro, called kantar in Egypt, was a mass used in Mediterranean trade, and each port kept its own standard. In Genoa it is 47.65 kilograms, in Valencia 41.55 kilograms, and the Egyptian kantar is about 44.928 kilograms. The name alone therefore does not tell you the weight: you need to know where the figure comes from. The converter turns any number of cantaros into kilograms and pounds for the variant you choose, so an old trade record can be read in today's units.
How the conversion works and common errors
The calculation is a single multiplication: the number of cantaros times the kilograms of the chosen port, then the same mass expressed in pounds. The most common error is applying the Genoa value to a document from Valencia or Egypt, which shifts every figure by several kilograms per unit. Another is rounding too early: here the rounding is done only once, at the end, with the number of decimals you ask for. If you do not pick a port, the Genoa cantaro is used.
How it works
Convert Mediterranean cantaro/kantar trade masses by port variant. Genoa 47.65 kg; Valencia 41.55 kg; Egyptian kantar ≈44.928 kg. No network calls, no random seeds, and no server state are required for a correct answer.
Failed jobs are not billed. Landings target the stated search intent with precise keywords. Prefer explicit units and ranges over silent coercion of bad types.
When a field is optional, defaults are documented in params and echoed in the output.

How many pounds is a cantaro?
A Genoa cantaro is 105.05 pounds, which is 47.65 kilograms. The result always shows both figures together, so you never have to convert the kilograms to pounds separately.
Why does the Valencia cantaro weigh less than the Genoa one?
Because each port kept its own standard. The Valencia cantaro is 41.55 kilograms and the Genoa one 47.65, more than six kilograms apart per unit, so choose the port before you convert.
Which port is used if I do not choose one?
The Genoa cantaro of 47.65 kilograms is used. If your document comes from Valencia or Egypt, select that variant so the weight is worked out with the right measure.
How is the weight rounded?
You set the number of decimals; the weight is calculated in full and rounded only once, at the very end, with halves going up. That way the kilograms and pounds carry no error from intermediate steps.

Technical notes
The calculator is free in the browser, deterministic, and identical in the API path. Inputs are validated before any arithmetic so invalid payloads fail with invalid_input. Half-up rounding is applied once from raw IEEE results when decimals are requested. Use the same JSON contract from spreadsheets, CMS hooks, automation, or teaching demos.

Technical questions
Is the browser widget free?
Yes. Tier A is free client-side with the same core as the API.
Does it use the network?
No. Computation is local and deterministic.
What on bad input?
invalid_input is thrown; failed jobs are not billed.
API compatible?
Yes — same JSON fields as params.json.
