Bike share trip cost calculator

A 24-minute ride by a member with 10 included minutes bills 14 minutes, plus the unlock fee that still applies, so you see the fixed and per-minute parts of the fare separately. Free in your browser.

This bike share trip cost calculator turns a published pricing schedule into a clear fare estimate. Enter the unlock fee, the rate charged for each minute, and the trip duration. If the rider is a member, add the included free-minutes allowance and the calculator applies it before computing usage charges. The result separates the fixed fee, billable time, usage cost, and total cost, making it useful for checking a receipt or planning a ride before departure.

Translate the operator's pricing into the input fields

Start with the pricing terms shown by the bike share operator. The unlock fee is the fixed amount charged for beginning a trip, even when the ride is very short. The per-minute rate is the amount added for every billable minute.

Enter both amounts in the same currency because the calculator does not perform currency conversion. Then enter the trip duration in minutes. Decimal durations are accepted when an operator measures time more precisely than whole minutes.

If the operator rounds trips up before billing, apply that rounding to the duration first so the input matches the operator's rule. The calculation itself does not invent a rounding policy. This distinction matters because a ride lasting just over a whole minute may be treated differently by different systems.

Always use the current terms for the specific city, pass, and bicycle type you intend to use.

Apply member free minutes correctly

A free-minutes allowance is applied only when member is true. For a non-member trip, the full duration remains billable even if a positive allowance was entered. For a member trip, the calculator subtracts the allowance from the duration but never lets billable time fall below zero.

If a member rides for eight minutes with a ten-minute allowance, the usage charge is zero and the unlock fee still applies. If the same member rides for fourteen minutes, four minutes are billable. This design keeps the fixed and variable parts of the fare visible instead of hiding them in a single number.

It also makes comparisons easier when one membership waives time but does not waive the unlock fee. Enter zero free minutes when a membership provides no time allowance. Do not use the allowance field for account credits, coupons, daily caps, pause fees, reservation charges, or taxes; those are different pricing rules and are not modeled by this calculator.

Read the result and check its assumptions

The result reports the original unlock fee and duration, the number of free minutes actually applied, the remaining billable minutes, the usage cost, and the total cost. Total cost equals the unlock fee plus billable minutes multiplied by the per-minute rate. Values are stabilized to ten decimal places to prevent floating-point noise while preserving ordinary pricing precision; the calculator does not force currency values to two decimals.

This is useful when a service publishes fractional-cent rates or calculates a subtotal before rounding the final charge. A negative duration is rejected because elapsed trip time cannot be negative, and negative fees, rates, or allowances are rejected for the same reason. Use the output as a transparent estimate and compare it with the operator's full policy.

Minimum fares, maximum daily charges, sales tax, e-bike surcharges, out-of-area fees, penalties, and subscription costs can change the final receipt. When one of those rules applies, add it separately rather than treating the basic result as an all-inclusive invoice.

Estimate a member commute

Apply the minutes included with a membership and see the remaining time charge before choosing a bike.

Check a basic trip receipt

Recreate the fixed unlock charge and minute-based subtotal to identify where a fare difference begins.

Compare two pricing plans

Run the same duration with different unlock fees, rates, and allowances to compare their basic trip costs.

Does the free-minutes allowance apply to everyone?

No. It is deducted only when member is true; otherwise every trip minute is billable.

Can free minutes remove the unlock fee?

No. The allowance reduces billable minutes only, so the unlock fee remains part of the total.

Are fractional trip minutes supported?

Yes. Enter a finite decimal duration when that matches the operator's measurement and rounding policy.

Does this include taxes, caps, penalties, or e-bike surcharges?

No. It models only the unlock fee, the per-minute charge, and a member free-minutes allowance.

How is the total cost worked out?

The total is the unlock fee plus the billable minutes multiplied by the per-minute rate. For members, the included minutes come off the ride time first, and billable time never drops below zero.

Translate the operator's pricing into the input fields

The API version costs $0.002 per request, while the calculator remains a straightforward deterministic calculation with no lookup of live operator prices.

What does an API calculation cost?

Each API request costs $0.002.

What happens if the duration is negative?

The request fails with an invalid_input error because a trip duration cannot be negative.
