AP Biology score calculator
48 multiple-choice answers right and 24 points on the written questions give a composite of 73.33 and a predicted AP Biology 4. Enter both counts from a practice exam; each section weighs half, and the composite is compared with typical recent cutoffs. Free in your browser.

The College Board AP Biology exam is reported as a single score from 1 to 5, but students, tutors, and course platforms usually finish a practice test with two raw counts: how many of the sixty multiple-choice questions were correct, and how many free-response points were earned on the six FRQs. Those counts are not the AP score. This AP Biology score calculator weights the multiple-choice section and the free-response section at fifty percent each, builds a 0–100 composite, and maps that composite through typical recent 1–5 cutoffs used by AP Bio score calculators.
How the AP Biology composite is built from two section counts
The current AP Biology exam, as described in the College Board Course and Exam Description, has two equally weighted sections. Section I is sixty multiple-choice questions. There is no guessing penalty, so the multiple-choice count is simply the number of questions answered correctly, an integer from 0 through 60.
Section II is six free-response questions: two long experimental-analysis items scored out of ten points each, and four short items — scientific investigation, conceptual analysis, model or visual analysis, and data analysis — scored out of four points each. Those six rubrics add to a free-response maximum of thirty-six raw points. A perfect 60 and 36 pair is 100.
A zero pair is 0. The predicted AP score is not that composite: it is a whole number from 1 through 5 obtained by comparing the composite with typical recent AP Biology calculator cutoffs of 80 for a 5, 63 for a 4, 43 for a 3, and 27 for a 2. Anything below 27 predicts a 1.
Those thresholds are a published-style prediction used by prep tools, not a live College Board curve for a named administration, because official cut scores move a few points from year to year. The mapping is still deterministic: the same two counts always produce the same composite and the same predicted score, which is what a homework checker or an LMS plugin actually needs.
Where an AP Biology score calculator earns its keep
Students use an AP Biology score calculator after every practice exam so they can turn a multiple-choice tally and a stack of FRQ rubrics into a predicted 1–5 the same afternoon, instead of waiting for an unofficial conversion chart that changes between review books. Biology teachers and tutors log weekly mock counts and need a deterministic predicted score that does not drift when two students post the same 48 and 24 on different days.
Pin the returned score and composite in tests, keep both counts inside their section maximums, and you get reproducible predicted AP Biology scores for homework, edge workers, and gradebooks without standing up a scoring service of your own. This landing is not a generic exam-percentage tool and it is not a GPA calculator: search intent is the AP Biology 1–5 from MC and FR counts, and the contract is built around those two published maxima.
What you can do with it
Practice-test predicted AP scores
Turn a mock multiple-choice tally and a free-response point total into a predicted AP Biology 1–5 the same day the practice exam is finished.
Teacher and tutor tracking
Log weekly MC and FR counts and compute a stable predicted score that does not change when two students post the same 48 and 24 on different days.
FAQ
What are the section maximums for AP Biology?
Multiple-choice maximum is 60 questions correct. Free-response maximum is 36 raw points: Q1 and Q2 out of 10 each, Q3 through Q6 out of 4 each.
What happens if a count is negative or exceeds the section maximum?
A 61 on multiple choice or a 37 on free response is rejected instead of inventing a score outside 1–5. Negative counts are rejected the same way.
Is the predicted 1–5 an official College Board score?
No. Official cut scores move slightly by year. This calculator uses typical recent AP Biology composite cutoffs (80/63/43/27 on a 0–100 equally weighted scale) so the same two counts always produce the same prediction.
What composite do I need for a 5 in AP Biology?
This calculator predicts a 5 from a composite of 80, a 4 from 63, a 3 from 43 and a 2 from 27; anything lower predicts a 1. These are typical recent cutoffs, and official ones move a few points each year.
How do I total my points on the AP Biology written questions?
Add the six questions yourself: the two long experimental-analysis items are scored out of 10 each and the four short items out of 4 each, for a maximum of 36. Enter that single total rather than each rubric line.

Technical notes
A negative count or a count that exceeds the section maximum — 60 for multiple choice, 36 for free-response points — fails with invalid_input instead of inventing a score.
How the AP Biology composite is built from two section counts
This calculator does not ask you to re-enter each rubric line; you add the six FRQ scores yourself and send the total as free_response. Equal fifty-fifty weighting is then applied on a 0–100 composite: multiple-choice weighted equals multiple_choice divided by 60, times 50; free-response weighted equals free_response divided by 36, times 50; and the composite is their sum, rounded to two decimal places.
Input contract, response shape, and error behaviour
A count above the section maximum also fails: 61 multiple-choice answers or 37 free-response points is not a legal AP Biology tally, and inventing a 6 would be a lie about what a score report can show. Failed validation is not billed. POST a JSON body with two required integer fields: multiple_choice, the number of Section I questions correct, and free_response, the total Section II points earned. multiple_choice must be a whole number from 0 through 60 inclusive. free_response must be a whole number from 0 through 36 inclusive. JSON numbers and numeric strings are accepted. multiple_choice also accepts the aliases mc, mc_correct, mc_count, and multiple_choice_correct; free_response accepts fr, frq, fr_points, fr_count, and free_response_points. Missing fields, empty strings, non-finite values, and non-integers fail with invalid_input and name the field so a form can highlight the broken control. A negative count fails with invalid_input — you cannot have minus three correct questions, and this endpoint will not clamp the value in silence. On success the body echoes both counts, reports mc_max 60 and fr_max 36, returns mc_weighted and fr_weighted on the 0–50 section scale, returns composite on the 0–100 scale, and returns score as the predicted AP exam score from 1 to 5. It also reports score_min 1, score_max 5, and the four cutoff constants cutoff_5 through cutoff_2 so a client can label the result without hard-coding the table, plus a short formula string. Example: multiple_choice 48 and free_response 24 yield mc_weighted 40, fr_weighted 33.33, composite 73.33, and score 4. This endpoint does not estimate percentiles, does not ingest item-response data, and does not call College Board.
Integration use cases
LMS and homework auto-check
Mark AP-style unit tests with an oracle that rejects a negative count or a count above 60 or 36 instead of silently clamping a buggy form.
Technical questions
How do I predict an AP Biology score from multiple-choice and free-response counts?
Send integer multiple_choice (0–60) and free_response (0–36). The API builds a 50/50 composite on a 0–100 scale and returns a predicted AP score from 1 to 5 using typical recent cutoffs of 80, 63, 43, and 27.
What does the AP Biology score calculator cost?
The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.
